Overclocking Athlon II x2 250

Thread Starter
Alright, I have a pretty cheap set up. I was wondering what the max OC anyone has gotten on stock voltages (1.4V). Right now im on the stock cooler running at 3.5Ghz, ran prime95 for a few hours and its stable and temps are nice. I have a after market cooler on the way right now and i want to OC more.
Here are my specs:
AMD Athlon II x2 250
BioStar A780L3G
4GB 1333MHz RAM- I have NO clue what brand..
HIS ATI Radeon 5770 1GB GDDR5
Windows 7 ult.

The new cooler will be Arctic cooler freezer 7 pro rev.2-- It's cheap.. But better than stock.

Thanks in advance.

Well 3.5 Ghz is probably your high point. Did you try to unlock? According to this thread: http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/10...l#post13359126 your chip doesn't unlock, but it is probably worth a try.

What kind of temps do you get at that speed? Idle/load? You say that they are nice, so that means with your new cooler on the way, you might be able to bump it up another 100 or 200 Mhz with a little more voltage.

Also, have you tried increasing your northbridge freq? That can give you a nice bump in performance as well.

I'm new to OC'ing. And I hear if you bump up the Northbridge to much it could **** everything up. Idk how much to Ovrclock it, maybe you could help? And no, Athlons can't unlock. I've tried Lol.

1. Northbridge overclocking doesn't mess anything up, at least not that I know of. Overclocking rarely messes anything up. If anything it will just cause a BSOD and then you know to downclock.

Overvolting is when you get into dangerous territory. Your motherboard is rated for 125W if I'm not mistaken. According to this thread, it isn't recommended to OC on it. http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherb...tion-list.html You are probably fine though, considering your chip's TDP is rated for 65W http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AM...0OCGQBOX).html

2. Well it seems like you've done a pretty good job at overclocking so far, so don't sell yourself too short brother! There is a lot that goes into overclocking. Patience is the most important factor. A lot of tweaking, testing, tweaking, testing, ad nauseam. If you really need general help, there are plenty of guides and stuff out there. Here is one another OCN member wrote http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/10...-friendly.html

3. Athlons can definitely unlock. Mine actually can't, but the Athlon II X3's are infamous for unlocking to quad core Phenoms, even a random L3 cache here or there. It is just simply a lot of the draw.

4. You are probably going to be asked to change that avatar by a mod. Lol. Just letting you know (they don't like swear words)

Well that's good to know. I think my NB reference clock is at 2Ghz. I'll mess round with it now that i know it won't catch fire or anything. I can't even tweak the voltages on this board(I don't think) unless there's some kind of voltage unlock-er thing.
& Thanks for all the info man. I'll take a look at all the links. & I'll change it soon, Thanks for the warning.

It should also be noted that a 65W TDP processor with overclock usually is actually less VRM intensive than a 95W TDP processor without OC. Though this is a 3+1 phase board, due to the low power consumption to begin with, I don't see an OC from you being a huge problem on this board

Are you able to go further than 3.5Ghz or is it amiss from there?

The Athlon II x2, except certain models NOT including that one, does not unlock.

You lost me on all the VRM TDP stuff. Idk if i can go past 3.5 Ghz or not. I'll test it right now just for you. Lol
& Are you saying my 250 may be able to unlock? My mobo has that Biostar UnlocKING on it and I've tried with no results other than my temp reading programs stop working. So i have to clear the cmos.

I'm sittin at 3.6Ghz right now. I'm not saying its stable, but i'm there. Gadgets never came up on startup.
Core speed- 3600Mhz
Multi- x15
HT Link- 2400Mhz
Core Voltage- 1.392
& I haven't been able to up my voltages, because my Mobo is crap? If you could take a look for me and see if there is a way i could i would be thankful.

I haven't done any testing at 3.6Ghz. I'm just going to keep going until i can't boot into windows and i'll let you know my limit at this voltage.

EDIT: I'm at 3750Ghz. I got all the way to 3850Ghz but couldn't boot up. But im up and testing at 3.7Ghz.
Temp as of right now is: 45-47c

Your particular CPU is not unlockable. What is your RAM speed? Has it been adjusted for the CPU OC? The VRMs should be fine on your CPU, is what I'm saying. Stability testing is important for 24/7 usability. Do you not have any option to raise the voltage in the BIOS?

On the page where you modify your CPU settings, there should also be a voltage section. I am not sure what kind of BIOS Biostar (haha) uses, so I can't say for sure. Where are you reading the voltages? From CPU-z? Or from the 'hardware monitor' section?

Maybe using a camera phone or something, you could take a picture and post it (of the section) so we could have a rough idea of what you would need to do.

Also, you might want to try lowering the HT link to 2000. That seems to improve stability, or at least it doesn't improve performance.
