thanks for trying
don't have to "switch" to a different buntu to ditch gnome, just install a different desktop environment: sudo apt-get install xfce4

As for the title bar:

If you right click the item in the task panel, can you restore/maximize?
Did you try toggling full-screen (F11)?
Is this only with firefox? If so, try this: http://www.wiredrevolution.com/gnome...l-with-firefox

If its just firefox, then I understand... for some doofus reason, I find Chromium to work better when Gnome is the DE. It looks the same, has the same add-ons, and will even import all your bookmarks.

Ok, so that doesn't really help other than telling me its with GNOME. Maybe reinstalling GNOME would help, maybe not. I think personally I would change my DE to KDE if you have the resources, and if not, then XFCE or LXDE. I've been having issues with GNOME as well, especially most recently. KDE is definitely prettier, and LXDE / XFCE are definitely faster. All of which seem to have substantially less bugs than GNOME so far. I've been using KDE with SLAX as my on-the-go OS for years, and I'm pretty used to it... and I've been using LXDE with Fedora 15 for maybe 2 weeks now, and its quite impressive in speed, but it's missing the luster of KDE.

Sorry I couldn't help much, I did try... and I tried so much that I ended up replicating the same issue, and more, on my Ubuntu based OS that I was running with GNOME. Changing DEs did fix the problem, but on the specific OS I was on, it also caused another. This should not be the case with regular Ubuntu.
