Help Hotswapping Hardrives

Thread Starter
I hope someone could help a newbie with this
I am about to deliver the PC to someone to mount it for me in a store
I am not so good explaining things in short sentences but hope is ok

And right now of hardisk i have:
1SSD crucial 64gb sata 3 2.5
1HHD WD black caviar 3.5 1tb Sata 3

My HAF-X Have 2 Hotswap bay
i had thought to mount both in there so i easy could remplace them
with new drives later.....

For instance i have plan to get another SSD now with 120gb another 1HHD black or blue caviar later
The extra HHD i might buy as soon as in 2 months the SSD in the end of 2011.

BUT.... i need to know and heres my questions

1) Can 3.5 size HHD also be placed in a hotswap bay or only 2.5 ?

2) I want to install Windows on SSD and mount in hotswap
so i can easy remplace the SSD when it fail...
I know the purpose with hotswap is to remplace a drive without Shutdown PC
Probaly Since i will have Windows running on the SSD it cannot be remplaced without shutting pc
But for me the purpose having SSD in hotswap is not remove it without Shutdown pc
but just be able to remove the most important drive when failing without opening the pc
and i accept i probaly have to turn off the Pc before removing the SSD
(cause if i remove it with windows running PC will blue screen or something?)

See If i had the SSD inside PC it would take more time to remplace it
than having it in the hotswap bay.
so i realy want to use one of the hotswap bays for the SSD.

So is it okey for me to put the SSD in hotswap bay if i just turn off the PC before removing
the drive when remplacing?

3) The HHD black caviar i be mounting now
whats best put it in the second hotswap bay
or should i just put it inside PC
and keep the second hotswap bay empty for when I buy a New SSD or HHD?

For a newbie what is most easy conect a Drive to hotswap for the first time
or conect it inside the PC?

Options i have:
SSD> hotswap bay 1
HHD> not hotswap but inside pc
HHD2 i buy later> hotswap bay 2 (i conect it without knowledge)

or

SSD> hotswap bay 1
HHD> Hotswap bay 2
HHD2 i buy later> not hotswap but inside pc

4) For SSD 2.5 and HHD 3.5 hardisk
that both are Sata 3 and i want them conected to Sata 3
when conected in hotswap should AHCI mode be enabled for the motherboard's SATA3 controller

5) For black caviar will it make more sound having it in hotswap
since i plan to get a blue caviar later should i better have that in hotswap
and the black caviar inside pc?

6) I have Asrocks fatal1ty P67 motherboard
to conect the 2 hardisk in hotswap by sata 3
would i need Marvel SATA drivers?

I realy apreciate your help on this

Only a 3.5 can fit i believe. I too have the Haf-x with Hotswap bay.
I believe a SSD can be hotswapped. You may need a 2.5 to 3.5 converter.
Yes i would install all HDD's and SSD's inside the PC and use the hotswap for a storage hard drive.
AHCI does not have to be enabled. You can run IDE or AHCI. It's up to you. I run a Raid setup, single SSD and have 1 HDD in hotswap.
Yeah, use black cavior inside the PC.
I would avoid the Marvell Controller.

Hope this helps.

Why would the 2.5 not fit in the Hotswap drive if it fit a 3.5
it would just move...if you move the PC case i think that all?
And remember is SSD that is no moving parts...so even if it would move a bit
it wont harm the drive i think you can leave the SSD drive flopping around loose

However i could get something like this?

but getting this would delay the mounting of the pc again...not realy want that...

But are you realy sure Hotswap are 3.5 i read they are 2.5 read:
"HAF X will take up to four 2.5' drives. We’ve shown that two will fit into hot-swap bays whereas another two 2.5' drives will fit into a specially designed bay within the 3.5' drive bracket. Only one from 5 bays will take 2.5' drives, whereas the rest is intended solely for 3.5' ones."

If this is correct i will be fine with my SSD 2.5
but i need to get a 2.5 HDD when i bought a new storage drive for hotswap
can anyone else with a haf-x confirm this?

I realy need to have easy quick acess to change the SSD
so i prefer having it in the hotswap.
but i need to know if it will be okey running windows on it from hotswap
as long i turn off pc before changing it and... that ofcourse since its 2.5 fits

So what i think now of doing is:
Hotswap1> SSD with windows
Hotswap2> Nothing at the moment... then later put another SSD or HHD there
Inside PC > put the Caviar black then for the moment

I will call coolermaster to ask them

Talked with coolermaster now
They say SSD 2.5 in a Hotswap bay is fine
So i will just use that i cant hotswap it since windows be on it
but as long i turn pc off when changing or upgrading SSD i be fine...

Btw is not that hard swap out a hardisk inside hafx case either
but having to detach the fan cables for the sidewindow make it a more hassle
than just use the hotswap bay so SSD better put in hotswap bay

but the Black caviar HHD goes inside defently so it will have enough cooling
