HDMI terrible image.. help?

I use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect my monitor to my PC. The picture is great, but when I switch to a regular HDMI cable, my display becomes unbearable to look at. It sort of looks like the contrast is waayy too high, but no amount of contrast/gamma/brightness tweaking changes the super sharp, bright, acid-washed sort of look. When I use the same HDMI cable and the same monitor to hook up a PS3, the PS3 output looks great. No issues whatsoever. Playing games on my PC with the HDMI - DVI cable is fine, but gaming with regular HDMI gives games the same super high contrast look. I assume there must be a setting in Windows, but I went through this whole "Calibrate Display" under color management and no change. It's not the graphics card either, because I've had the same issue w/ 2 different gfx cards.

There must be some really easy fix and I'm going to feel like an idiot when someone posts it, but Google has failed me and I'm drawing a blank. Any help would be appreciated.

You may need a top of the range HDMI cable. When i use hdmi it looks horrid compared to DVI.

It's a 40 dollar Sony cable - pretty nice quality. You say HDMI looks horrid compared to DVI for you too? Why is this! Thank God I'm not alone but I need to know why!
