OC'ing a Q8300. Help me I'm desperate.

Hey!

So yes, can anyone help me overclock my q8300 to atleast 3.0ghz on a stock cooler? Well I know someone here on Overclock.net(his name is Crouch) that overclocked his q8300 to 3.4ghz on a stock cooler with everything set to auto(ram timings, vcore, etc) and was running it really stable.
Well I followed some of his tips and oc'd to 3.0ghz with everything at auto and it resulted to my computer dying after a 10-minute stress test with prime95.(really, it didn't turn on anymore) So basically I RMA'd the mobo and the processor back to the store and lied about the reason why it broke down. Given the new replacements, I am ready to OC again.

Well, a little boost to 3.0ghz won't hurt right? What steps do I have to follow?
1. Should I leave the vcore to auto?
2. Ram timings confuse me, does a 1:1 ratio mean its a good thing?
3. Should I leave the ram timings to auto too?
4. Was esd the reason my mobo broke down?(my hand was above the fan checking the heat of the heatsink while using prime95 and I think that killed it)

Just can't stand the choppiness of bad company 2 on medium settings with the stock clock of my q8300.

Any sort of help will really, really be appreciated.

I have the same CPU and had the same board you have and all I did was set the multiplier to 12.5*240 without changing anything else and it ran on 3Ghz stable 24/7. But I do suggest you get a better cooler as it is defnitly going to run hotter.
