Cheap cooler for an old pc

Thread Starter
So today i recieved a computer from a co-worker who after the powersupply died, went and bought a new pc and needed to see if i could get the pictures off of the old computer and told me to keep the tower.

I was wondering what cpu cooler i could put on it to run cool and quiet? Its got a pentium D805 processor in it and I thought it was an LGA 775 CPU. I went to see if my old cpu heatsink would fit using the lga 775 attachment but no luck, Anyone have any knowledge of what cooler i can put on this thing or if i even can put one on?

Edit: If it comes down to it, i found a cheap replacement board that I could use so I can actually put that computer in a decent case with a decent aircooler on it.

Gateway. BTX Form Factor. Sorry, finding anything to fit that will be more trouble than it's worth.

Will the chip at least work in this motherboard? Im just looking to get this pc running at lower temps so I can use it for the weekends I am home from school because it will probably be faster than my parents pc, especially if i can pop in an old videocard. I have an ATX mid tower case i can use if the chip and ram will work with that motherboard.

Says it supports pentium d, so yes it should work. I don't know about the ram.
Is it even worth it though? i would just like clean out the dust and fans and stuff and it should be quiet and just fine with whatever cooler it has.

The socket that the Pentium D 805 CPU uses is LGA775. That motherboard you linked should work fine with that CPU.

CPU support list

When I'm trying to keep a CPU somewhat cool and quiet...I go to one of the Zalman CPU HSF's for the LGA775 socket. They're fairly cheap, quiet and every one of them I've ever had kept the CPU cool at stock or slightly overclocked speeds. I've used the Zalman CNPS8700, CNPS9700 and the CNPS9900 HSF's on various Intel LGA775 CPU's and even a socket 1366 i7-960 with the 9900 model.

Check out this article. I know it is a little off topic but this IS Overclockers.net

Also I would buy some good thermal paste for it and clean off the old stuff + get a better fan. Good Luck!

P.S. Check out how I got a Pentium 4 heatsink to work on my Socket AM3 motherboard. LOL
