So I am currently working on a paint job for my G500 (don't worry, I will post pics when done...if it doesn't turn out to bad lol). What I am needing to know is how to take off the navigation buttons. I am assuming that they are hooked up to the chip with the ribbon attatched to the top piece of the mouse. I want to get that taken off because I am currently (taking a break to write this) scratching off the rubber (using 3m scotch brite pad). Working very well, but taking a good amount of elbow grease. Then I will be painting where the rubber was (I loathe the rubber on this mouse, but love the mouse design). Wanna get this done, and waiting on a Xai to become available online (amazon or steelseries), so I can do my own comparison between G500, Xai and CM Storm Sentinel (previously had issues on a cloth pad, but got my first hard pad today, 9HD, and I am LOVING it so far, very smooth, worth the money).

So ya, any help, much appreciated, but this is getting done one way or another.

I hate the rubberised coating on Logitech Mice, had the same on my old MX400, and it started peeling after a year or two. I just kept scraping at it with my nail until it was all off tongue.gif

I got the whole mouse stripped down. Got it painted yesterday. It looks good, but after it was dry to touch, I felt it and it felt kinda rough and meh. Gonna wetsand in a little bit to see what happens. This is my first paint job so. I'm not gonna loose any sleep if I end up scrapping it. I despised that rubber coating. I honestly hated to use the mouse because of that. Plus my Xai will be in next week =).

How did it go?

I'm thinking of painting the top panel on my brothers MX518 white for him.

Well, again, this is my first paint job ever. But overall I think it came out good. I just finished wetsanding it. Heres what I did. Sorry no worklog:

1) Using this thread as a reference to taking it apart
http://www.overclock.net/other-hardware-mods/993381-white-carbon-fiber-g500-mod-walkthrough.html
I was able to get all the plastic pieces off.

2) Used 350 grit and 3m scotch brite to get the rubber coating off.

3) Used that same 350 to lightly sand all the platic pieces (also wetsanded, made it easier it seems).

4) Did two coats of primer, let dry over night.

5) Wetsanded all the pieces to smooth out the primer. Then let dry for a little bit.

6) Totaled 5 coats of Shiny/Metallic Red base coat for all pieces.

7) Used flat black for the base piece, click wheel button doohickie, and DPI changer buttons. 2 light coats so red would still show through. 1 more coat of red for the other pieces.

8) 3 Coats of clear coat on everything shortly after. Dried overnight.

9) The pieces with black didn't turn quite like I expected. Black was very rough and bits were falling off. So I wetsanded the black lightly and was pleasently surprised. Smoothed out everything and lightened up the black. Gives it a very nice seethrough/shimmer effect I think.

Everything is drying right now from the wetsanding. I'll take some pictures of me putting it back together and the final product. You can tell that I'm a straight up newb at this, as there are spots where I sanded a little to hard, and spots where I hit the primer a little. But oh well. Imperfections are the sign of an honest job. I'll get better with time. Should have something for yall in a couple hours. Time for some video games =).

Just slapper her back together.

Prep
dsc0002az.jpg

Reattaching the navigation card thingie
dsc0005eb.jpg

Popped the LED strip back in
dsc0007in.jpg

Install the navigation card thingie into the bottom part
dsc0009to.jpg

Install the scroll wheel adjuster (ya, I know, for some reason I didn't mask the underside before priming).
dsc0010kw.jpg

Seated the bottom part with all the guts and started screwing it in.
dsc0011as.jpg

Pulled the bottom part off to start installing the top part.
dsc0012rg.jpg

screwed the bottom in and put the feet back on and D.U.N.
dsc0014o.jpg

Here you can see where I sanded a bit much.
dsc0015zm.jpg

Notice the slight chipping where I sanded to much. Was having clearance issues and got a little over zealous.
dsc0016ko.jpg
dsc0017yc.jpg
dsc0018pl.jpg
dsc0019ww.jpg

Haven't plugged her in yet, but I'm sure it works fine. Feels good, has a little texture to it so you can get a good firm grip. I wanna let it sit for at least a few more days before I give her a run. Let the pain settle some more.

What do yall think? Not too shabby for a first timer I think.
