[extremetech] Windows 8 ARM wont have x86 emulation support - Page 3

ARM is used only on low powered mobile kinda devices.

How is that gonna hurt x86's market share?

Intel losing the war is not going to happen as it is a giant compared to ARM & most PC's today in the market use Intel not ARM.

Thanks for fixing it quickly

On-Topic: It's interesting how this will be a non-legacy windows release, potentially removing all bloat, but if I can only play 360 games (on the arm version) I'm not interested.
What I get annoyed at is, when I make a mistake, go to edit it, and by the time I've edited the first post in the thread is "Fix X", which I already fixed. Sets a bad tone for the thread. Give people at least a minute or two.

They do.

.NET? Platform independent. (Its running on Windows Phone 7 (ARM) and Xbox 360 (PowerPC))
C#? Platform independent.
HTML5? Platform independent.
Javascript? Platform independent.

You use the same tools to write Windows Phone 7 apps as you will for Windows 8.

If Windows 8 deprecates the Win32 API and switches to a C#/HTML5 + Javascript system then all future apps will be cross platform.

There is this David and Goliat thing in the literature .Sometimes giants fail fast and easy when proper tactics is used

ARM CPU-s are less power hungry and they are quite cool.If you combine this ARM stuff with a good GPU you get a "beast" ,with very low power consumption doing multimedia stuff and more just fine.
Seeing this huge evolution in this ARM stuff we can say that X86/X64 market may shrink fast.
The lack of Intel license ownership makes the products cheap and competition more strong.Having more than 2 vendors fighting for the crown is much more interesting ,than the Intel <-> AMD war.

Microsoft has seen something otherwise they would of kept ignoring the ARM market.

Well if you want to play that card, I'll point out that compiling to bytecode was hardly invented by the Java camp. I was writing cross-platform USCD Pascal that essentially compiled to bytecode (they called it p-code, as I recall) on an Apple ][e in 1983. This is actually the first thing that crossed my mind when Java was invented and touted as being so innovative because of the bytecode model...what was so innovative, I was doing it over a decade prior to that?!?

[Edit] But more to the point, the .NET runtime can be ported to other processors just as easily as a JVM can.

ARM is double performance every few years..... Intel's year-over-year gains are much less (10-20%?). It will be interesting to see ARM performance in 3-5 years.

x86 CPUs have been "good enough" since Athlon X2 or Core 2 Duo. Most people simply do not need more CPU power. How many people actually need a hexcores are 4GHz?

Intel might be a big company but there are WAAAAY more ARM-based CPUs shipped yearly. The total size of ARM companies makes Intel look small. Don't forget that Samsung, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and Apple all design ARM processors. There are dozens of companies that hold ARM licenses.
Once again...

Transmeta did x86 emulation-like design with their Crusoe and Efficeon.
China is supposedly attempting it with their Loongson 3.

Didn't Cyrix reverse engineer and develop their own x86 emulation that Intel fought but lost in court? Couldn't MSFT/ARM license this from National Semiconductor (cyrix merged with in 97 IIRC)

Or maybe .NET.

Microsoft is in pretty good shape that way actually.

Besides of all the programming and porting stuff you guys are mentioning, and I'm also sure that Microsoft will release a -NET with an ARM compiler, Intel is doing this in hopes that this will hep them grow when they release new x86 based processors for tablets, cell phones, etc... not so long ago I read that Intel was preparing such launch for when they hit the 22nm or 15nm milestone.
