Need help determing if temps are right - 2600k - p8z68-v pro

Hi. As you can probably see im new on the forums here. So hello to you guys

Okay then, so ive recently bought a new pc setup, and i think i am having some issues

My setup is as follows :
PSU : Corsair 750W
mobo : asus p8z68-v pro
ram : 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz (CL8)
cpu : 2600k - with a noctua nh-d14 cooler (using the stock fans)
gpu : ZOTAC gtx 470 Amp (Thinking bout getting a GTX 580 Lightning or a GTX 580 Amp 2)
hdd's : 1x ocz vertex 2 80gb, 1x Seagate momentus xt 500gb, 1x WD Caviar something something 2tb

alright onto the point, my 2600k idles at 35-40 degrees celcius and i think that is a bit too high for stock speeds right ? ive tried reseating the cooler several times using different methods to apply the thermal paste (am using Arctic Silver 5 btw)

Ive also noticed that my vCore is higher in idle mode than when it is fully loaded, whats up with that?

link to some pics :

idle: http://imageshack.us/f/836/idlei.png/

5 minutes of p95 large FFT's load : http://imageshack.us/f/204/p95load.png/

i was looking forward to oc'ing this baby to 4.4ghz or similar, but now im not sure i have the balls with those temps
Im not entirely sure of my ambient temp, but it has been overly hot outside the last couple of days - my guess would be my ambient temp is around 25 degrees celcius.

Also, does it matter much that i didnt give the Arctic Silver 5 the 200 hours it supposedly needs to cure ? (i just finished reseating the heatsink for the 3rd time 30 minutes before making this post)

Hope someone can help

// Beefskull

EDIT : oh yea i forgot to say, the only thing ive tampered with in the BIOS was RAM timings and RAM voltage, set the ram to 8-8-8-24 and 1.5v

What is the CPU's vcore set to in the BIOS? Is it on Auto/Manual/Default?

I don't know a huge amount about Sandy Bridge voltages, but those temps are definitely not quite right, especially with an aftermarket cooler.

Have you set the BIOS back to default settings? Have you checked for any BIOS updates for your board? Might be some additional compatibility updates for your CPU etc.

i have left the vCore on auto, as i didnt think it would need adjustment to just run on stuck speeds. A weird thing is, if you notice the cpu-z vCore readings, they are actually higher when the cpu is idle than when its a full load, - this seems very weird to me

BIOS is the newest version

Try setting the vcore to manual and use the stock vcore setting. Not sure what it is for the 2600k though. Check on Intel website for the spec.

BIOS says vCore is just under 1.2 - so why is it showing as above 1.3 in cpu-z ?

Are you running the latest asus bios version?

Auto voltage almost always over compensates for voltage so in other words it is feeding the cpu more than it actually needs.

For a 4.5ghz overclock your cpu should be running in the 1.35 - 1.38v range maybe lower if you have a good cpu so i would start with this. set your vcore manually with an ultra high llc setting and change your multi to 45. You may also have to enable PLL overvoltage in the bios options to achieve this.

Do you have adequate air flow throughout your case?? with a 1.3v vcore on auto i am not suprised your temps are so high @ stock It is quite high. my first point of call would be lowering it manually to see if this made a difference and then if not i would update to the latest asus bios

tried ur settings, it boots and all, but check the temps O.o http://imageshack.us/f/580/unledfjc.png/ - its crazy hot - idle temps are only bout 2degrees celcius hotter though - i used 1.3vCore

I have to wonder though, does it matter much that the Arctic Silver 5 does not yet have the 200 (ridiculous!!) hours of breakin time to cure properly ?

And yes i am running the latest bios

No chance, even after 200+hours you will only see a 1-2c difference anyhow. imo tim works best when it's fresh on the cpu.

Are you 100% sure you have good contact between cooler/cpu ?? . Have you tried the stock cooler? is your cooler perfectly flat underneath ?. With your cooler you should never be topping 60c with a 4.5ghz overlclock.

have you tried other monitoring software ?

Nah, the curing period only shaves off a few degrees to be honest.

It looks to me like either he heatsink isn't sitting on properly or your case has poor airflow.

What are your ambient temps? Is it hot outside/inside?

there is no doubt my case has some pretty bad airflow, there are NO fans at all installed in it, but i am running it without the side so it shouldnt matter all that much (i think) - my old q9650 was running way cooler than this, same case and all - oc'd to 4ghz. I could try reseating the heatsink one more time, but before i do so, i would like some professional advice on how to apply the thermal past then. should i use the vertical line method, pea method or cover the whole chip ? and how thick should the layer be ? im asking cuz i think i only have enough paste left for 1 more reseating.

my NH-D14 is perfectly flat underneath.

btw previously i just used toilet paper and water to wipe off the thermal paste, should i do this differently ?- i have some (google translate:-) methylated spirits - will that be better ?
my ambient temp is around 25 degrees celcius

Thank you all in advance
