U overclocking on the ASUS M4A87TD EVO?

no mosfet cooling makes me cringe....

itll throttle the CPu speed down to 1Ghz to compensate.

In benchmarking, exact CPU is important. Especially when it comes to testing for accuracy in CPU-bound games. While a Phenom X4 might not have any significant performance gain after a certain speed, 3,919MHz and 4,000MHz are different enough to net a difference, thus effecting the accuracy of your results compared to someone else's.

Only mentioned it because I benched Dirt 3 last night on exactly 4Ghz and 3919Mhz, made no different to average, maximum or minimum.

Going from a Phenom II 920 @ 3.72 to a 2500K @ 4.5 saw a decent increase in fps in most games. It wasn't a bottleneck though as the cpu usage was never maxed with the Phenom II. I'm guessing it's just that the 2500k is more efficient.

Well, the Phenom II architecture was on par with Intel's Core 2 Quad architecture, IIRC. SB processors are leaps ahead of Phenom II at this point. Myself, going from a Phenom II @ 3.8 GHz to an i7 920 @ 4.0 GHz increased fps by a significant amount in almost every game I play. With that said, my case was most likely due to SLI GTX 470s being bottlenecked by the Phenom and not the i7. I'm sure it would be a different story with a single card.

I love AMD's price/performance so I'm really hoping Bulldozer brings a lot to the table. I'll make the jump back in a heartbeat.

Well, theoretically speaking, if you went from a phenom II @3.7 to a phenom II @4.5 you would have seen a decent increase in fps in most games as well btw

Regardless, different people obtain 3.9GHz or 4.0GHz or whatever, different ways, and that will include variable factors such as NB speed, RAM/Memory speed, etc.

Good job on totally missing the point btw. Which was, going from a 3.7 clocked cpu, to a 4.5Ghz cpu will net you a fps increase regardless of the cpu architecture between the two, even if it was the exact same chip.

ie. Not a good comparison lol.

im fairly sure that alot of these intel vs amd benchmarks are already out there.

from my experience however i have found that in general games with heavy gpu load like metro 2033 there is no GPU limitation however games that rely on cpu like bfbc2 i did see improved fps as i overclocked my cpu however the fps was already that high it made no real difference and when AA is switched on it balances out and becomes GPU bound.

so what im trying to say is YES there will be a bottle neck, however most new games are GPU bound and the ones that are not are usually getting over the vsync threshold (for 60hz anyway )

curiously however, crysis seems to be cpu limited but it appears its not using more than 2 cores so thats probably why.
