Upgrading to AM3 on AM2+ board, but with BIOS update

Thread Starter
I've been trying to find a good replacement for my faulty Phenom 9600 and replacing it with something faster. Since the purchase of my system (in Dec. 2008) everything is the same except for software changes and some hdd swaps. My motherboard's manufacturer has released an update to make the stock AM2/AM2+ support mobo AM3 compatible.

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186141
BIOS update link:http://www.foxconnsupport.com/downlo...=&sort=Drivers
The bios is the most up to date, Version P12, and says it supports AM3.

The second issue is my current ram, its merely DDR2. I have 4 sticks of 2GB RAM running in unganged at 800MHz. Since the board is only compatible with DDR/DDR2; will it, with an AM3 processor, still work with my current DDR2?

In the end I might have to get a new Mobo, set of RAM, and processor.

Any help is appreciated.

All will work after the BIOS update - AM3 processors support DDR2 and DDR3. Your motherboard supports DDR2, so you won't be able to use DDR3 in that board, but in my opinion it isn't worth it to upgrade now to a new AM3 board and DDR3 for two reasons: DDR3 brings very little performnace boost, and Bulldozer AM3+ will launch soon (so AM3 will be obsolete soon).

Either get a a cheaper Athalon II X4, because the Tpw of that board probably wont support a 125w processor, and then upgrade the mobo and ram later on, or just wait for bulldozer. You could try a 955 but that may be the end of the board.

It'll work, but don't clock it.
When you have the new chip, you can then take that AM3 chip with you to an AM3 or AM3+ board and new DDR3 memory.
Be wary of the windows updater for the BIOS, I've had a foxconn board die doing that, it crashed windows in the middle of the update and no BIOS means board no worky.
