Physx assistance please!

Thread Starter
Last night I ordered some parts and before I could finish my research apparently they are arriving today!

My computer is:

M4A785TD-V EVO
AMD Phenom II 965 3.4 Quad Core Black Edition
EVGA Nvidia 570 (factor oc'd)
4x2gb 1600 Mhz Corsair Dominator Black Edition Ram

Still need to make a sig sorry new! Anyways I recently learned that my 8600 gt card could be added to my rig for a performance boost is physx games as it'd be a stand alone physx card. This may not be the right place to ask this but...

Apparently I have a 16x and a 4x PCIE port on that mobo? Would the 4x port be fast enough for the 8600gt to run physx?

First things first, what games are you playing?

There are 2-300 games that use Physx. Only 20 of those games can use GPU acceleration.

Well when I read the large list a lot of my games were on it, I'll go dig it up again to answer your question but in my ignorance I don't see the benefit.

Metro 2033 (Don't have, but am getting!)
Sacred 2
Unreal Tournament 3
Dark Void <- All 4 of these games accept GPU accelleration.

I can't find the list that had some of my other games stated as Physx games and I can't seem to find it but either way what I'm interested in knowing is will my Mobo beable to run it? I read my mobo is terrible for crossfire/sli because the PCI-E slot and all though it's not sli the slot is still slower?

depends on the mobo as well. that 4x, unless its open ended, wont fit a graphics card

If the card is just laying around, you may as well try it. Yes, your mobo will support using the 8600GT for physX, and 4x slot is plenty for that purpose.

HOWEVER, the 8600GT is SO much slower than the GTX570, there exists a very real possibility that deploying is as dedicated physX will actually give you worse performance vs. just letting the 570 do both rendering and physX.

I think you'd need at least a 9600GT (64 CUDA cores, vs. the 32 on the 8600) to get ANY benefit, and preferably you'd have like an 8800GT (112 cores) or better to pair with something like a 570.

But since it's free and just sitting around, might as well try playing around w/it

I'm sure he means it's a 16x sized slot, but electrically it's only 4 lanes

Well the guide I read said I'd gain benefit from using the 8600gt but what I was trying to ask is if the 4x slot or w/e it's called the non 16 slot would be fast enough to make it worth while.

Just to reiterate: If the 8600GT doesn't help your perf on a game w/GPU physX capability, it will NOT be because it's a 4x slot. I promise you that

If this happens, it'll be because it's just too slow of a card vs. your 570. An 32-core 8600GT would make a great dedicated physX card if your main card was like a 128-core GTS250, but it becomes very questionable when paired with a 480-core GTX570.

Like I say, though, it's free ... so you might as well try it ... and feel free to post some benchies with and without the dedicated card. Batman AA and Mafia 2 both have free demos with included benchmark apps

The 8600 will KILL your FPS.

Take it from a guy who tried. I didn't even use it on a 570, I used it on a GTX260. It actually lowered my framerate in the Mafia 2 benchmark using the 8600 as a dedicated PhysX card. It's an issue of Performance ratios. If the PhysX card is slow enough in comparison to the main GPU it will bottleneck the main GPU.

Your PhysX card and your main GPU have to have at least somewhat similar performance or you risk forcing the 1st GPU to wait for the PhysX card to finish.

DO NOT DO THIS.

In your case a more sensible solution would be to grab something like a GTS250 or better. A 8800GTX might cut it.

Anything slower and you risk bottlenecking your main video card.

It's free, he should try it and find out for himself

And whilst I agree w/the sentiment in general, I don't agree w/the extremity. You don't need a GTS250 to pair w/a single 570.

I have an old 8800GT I use for physX w/my SLI 470's, and it provides a very nice increase in both Mafia 2 and Batman AA vs. running physX on one of my 470's in SLI.

I think a 96-shader 9600GSO or GTS240 is about a perfect level of card (assuming it's not just a free card you have sitting around) to handle physX with a single 570. The benefits of 'more' card would be pretty minimal, put it that way
