You'll prolly have over 16GB of pagefile, you can set it much smaller if you want to, 4GB or 2GB even, just type pagefile into start menu and it will tell you how to change it.

What's a good number to lower it to? OR how can you determine how much you actually need?

If you are just gaming with your 16 GB of ram, set the page file to something small like 2 GB. If you do a lot of workstation intensive apps, you probably have to set more.

Edit: If you require full memory dumps for debugging, the page file needs to be memory size + 1 MB.

1GB is plenty for the page file

I play a game like once a week. And do some photo and video editing for family photos/videos when I have free time. And I also use my computer to stream movies to my PS3.

So setting it to 2gb would be okay then? How will I notice if it's not enough? Where would speed be impacted?

Thanks for the info guys.

Grab a pagefile monitor, I've used this in the past:

http://www.standards.com/ThisAndThat...geMonitor.html

Set up a worst case (open and use all the apps/games/anything your ever likely to use together), then see how much was used and add a gig or two for safety. Once ram and pagefile is all used something will crash so don't make it too small.

Edit - if your doing photo and video and streaming make sure you have all that going when you check the pagefile use.

Depends. Some games crash a lot if they don't have enough pagefile.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines is the example that sticks out best in my mind. It says in the readme it needs at least 1400MB of pagefile, and it's right - 2GB, 4GB, 6GB, 12GB RAM... it doesn't matter - if it's not got that 1400MB pagefile, it'll be a complete crashfest. It's pretty bad anyway at times, but with <1400MB, it'll crash every few minutes, rather than every couple of hours.
