Sapphire 6950 2gb Shader unlock

Thread Starter
I just picked up this card

http://canadacomputers.com/product_i...item_id=035511

I'm aware that this is a non ref but the dude where I bought it from said that these can unlock and be flashed etc by flashing to an unlockable bios version of the 5950 and then flashing or shader unlocking etc.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice or sources to help me out, I've done lots of skimming around this site and others but just need some sort of solid advice I guess about this particular card? I'm also not too worried about bricking it as he said if it fails I can just return it as its apart of there policy for there vid cards.

My other option is to just take it back and either go with my first choice which was a 560ti or maybe pay a little extra and go with a 570? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I bought the same thing from the same place expecting the ref. 21188-00-40R, they didn't have a pic on there site then

But got the non-ref 11188-00-40R, they didn't know the difference, and only since have added the 111...# to match the non-ref pic.

Also, http://www.xpresscanada.com/index.php/main is owned by canadacomputers, and is there official online store, and is cheaper than cc proper for some reason, and $6 overnight shipping vs $7 from cc proper....same people answer the phone and all...check it out if you use them online, they compete with newegg on some things for sure.

Last time I looked for the 11188... unlocking was ~2 months ago, no luck then, I'm too cash strapped and affraid to try

EDIT: Whats it OC to using the TRIXX that goes to 1200/1600, and I use MSIAB at the same time for extra volts

You've been wrongly informed then; that card does not unlock.

And why on earth would you downgrade to a 560? Both the 560 and 570 are seeing VRAM bottlenecks in newer games.

If it doesn't unlock that's a shame but not the end of the world. I would try and modify the current bios with RBE if possible. Then at least you could OC it to hell. The shaders don't make a massive different, but the voltage and core clock increases do.

Why would he mess with RBE if the card doesn't unlock?? He'd be flashing the card then bricking it! There's a variety of ways to overclock w/o flashing.

Thanks for the replys so far, I think im going to try and return it and go for this http://canadacomputers.com/product_i...item_id=035399
The 6950 is great but I'm not going to be runing anything at any crazy Res so the 2gbs seem kinda useless, I was also extremely sad that it cant unlock in anyway. For the extra $40 I'd rather just pay the little extra and get the better card, good choice or not?

The 570 is a great card, no doubt.

I would personally go 6970 rather than the 570.

Partly biased towards AMD, though.
The 6970 performs nearly the same, and if you do go up to higher resolutions, the 2GB on the 6970 will definitely be needed.
