fans shorted GPU may be dead

Thread Starter
i bought some fans from ebay to ghetto mod my HD 3870x2

well erlier i had the side of my case off to install my new blue cold cathodes

lucky i did have it off just as my computer started shutting down smoke filled my case so i just hit the power switch on the back of the PSU at first i thought my gpu caused it boot no the fans shorted out on the molex connections the well just look at the connections

fan that was just starting to short

fan that shorted red 5v cable melted and fused with the 12v cable on the fan causing well loads of power to go to gpu and possibly killed it

in this image you can see clearer that red 5v cable overheated and then melted and shorted with the cable on the fan that runs off the 12v yellow cable

please comment im hopping i can get the gpu working again im going to link the ebay seller to this thread once they reply

I doubt this would have killed the gpu. Have you tried booting again?

Wow How the heck did that cable melted? It seems kinda odd to me. I think the cables won't over heat or heat enough to melt the Cable wrap! something else must have happend. Just my guess.

Anyways...I don' think I get it Fully... A fan Cable melted and the naked cables made contact with the wraped cable? And then the naked cables multed the wraped cable and then short? Like fan red + gpu yellow?

Can you take and show some pics of the GPU?

This is why you use pci cables and not adapters. Also I am assuming since I never heard of a colours-IT 550w its crap (usually how it goes). Recipe for disaster it seems.

It looks to me like the 5v line from the PSU has overheated/shorted which the fans aren't connected to?? Did you have something connected after the fans to the 5v? I'd prolly be concerned that the PSU didn't detect it and shut down.
