[GamersMint] Bethesda: Consoles to be the lead platform for Skyrim - Page 12

guys, I think what people are actually mad about is the fact that they're going to make the game "more accessible", the graphic is an issue, but not big enough for not buying this game imo.

Leading a game by a month or two doesn't necessarily mean it's a port. You may have all three versions of your game close to completion, but maybe the marketing/advertising for the consoles doesn't line up, so you can release the PC version first and wait on the console versions, or vice versa. Sometimes you may also want to spend a little more time polishing a certain version, especially if it's going to earn you money. There are also reasons to release or not release during a certain time, like competition. Would it be a good idea for BF3 to release the same week as MW3? I'm not sure, but you can bet they know, and things like that will affect a launch schedule.

I don't claim to be all knowing, what I claim is to know more about game development then a bunch of people who just play video games.

Ports cost the developers more money. They make the game for all three platforms at the same time to lower cost. This is why there is actually very little porting that goes on today. It is easiest to develop for PC, 360, and PS3 simultaneously. It's no coincidence that the WiiU specs seems to line up closely with the 360, it will mean that devs can develop for all 4 platforms at once now, and then Nintendo will have all kinds of new 3rd party games.

For more info click the red link in my sig about PC/Console game porting.

I'm not going to take a couple of extremely vague sentences from an interview and judge a game that will be coming out over half a year from now. However, I do have a bad feeling about Skyrim. I have a feeling its either going to be very great, or its going to be a big disappointment. I base this on my gut feeling, and nothing more. I am also completely hopeful that I am wrong.

Though what makes me want to physically slap some people on OCN is this terrible mentality of, "I hope this game gives me an excuse to spend a lot of money on upgrading my computer". Games are NOT excuses to upgrade your computer, and NO game needs to require a lot of hardware to be a good game or even a beautiful game visually. This hobby revolves around the games and the experience, NOT THE HARDWARE. If your motivations are the opposite of that, you need to re-evaluate your priorities.
Slowly upgrading.

There is only a couple things they need to learn from Oblivion:

-make levels more static, no scaling
-make dungeons more unique and not generic. Fewer and more interesting dungeons with unique payouts are better than more dungeons
-make characters less robotic
-make combat more complex, and improve customizations of weapons
-make the world more interesting from a lore standpoint...make me want to learn about the world and its history

They get those things right they have themselves a winner. I saw these all really well implemented in Fallout so I have faith they did just as good a job including these considerations into Skyrim.

Yeah game are made with functionality in mind but lets be honest. Just because they're made with multiple platforms in mind, they're still developed on PC and until that changes games are still Ported. As you are well aware, games have to work smoothly for developers. Otherwise they don't see the light of day at the end result. I don't know what happens to PC controls, but I would surmise some twit in developing somehow rationalized that PC gamers wouldn't be interested in playing some of these games so the PC controls are removed/misplaced resulting in backward Porting to get PCs' the ability to play these games.

Case in point. Grand Theft Auto IV. Developed 100% on PC. Rockstar didn't even think that they would offer it for PC for whatever reason. PC Gamers got in their ear about it and they Ported over to PC. Only now the controls suck and it's a known problem amongst EVERY gamer around the world. People will still play if but the original controls were lost and we know why.

I don't care if you the developer wants to make things accessible for everyone. That's fine, I welcome that. It keeps gaming moving forward. just don't do stupid shiz and throw out perfectly decent controls requiring a last minute crash build of new control features. THAT is what irks me the most.

Until games are developed 100% on Console for all platforms do not piss the Gaming community by ignoring the PC crowd.

Also just cause I'm on OCN doesn't mean my bros are on OCN or have limited hardware because they aren't on OCN. PC Gamers are a much larger group than OCN. I've got friends who have 570, 5970, 6950 cards that aren't even affiliated with a site. And they're just as disenfranchised as myself with the lack of content for their systems. Most of us are Students and would rather put out money into the ability to do everything on one platform. This includes research for assignments. Something you CANNOT do on Console.

A few of us only have Consoles cause we can't get some of the titles for PC. Metal Gear, Gears of War etc. I won't complain about that because that's how Sony, MicroSoft and Nintendo pull in a Quarter of their Console sales. You have to love the Console Fanbois who won't play on any other platform but their precious singular franchise "_(pick one)_" console. I don't speak for all of us but given the chance to own a PC title or a Console title I'd rather have PC.
