I also hate people always putting the blame on devellopers, those guys for the most part are guys like us who only want to produce the better game as humanly possible and be paid for it, but publishers only se $$ signs and keep forcing them to dumb down their games, be it console or Pc franchises alike. Consoles games used to be hard as nail as were PC games back then, even though those were my childhood games I'm glad that they made games more accessible, I just don't want them to go to far and ruining the very soul of gaming.
This.
You just described what's wrong with gaming today. It no longer is "a few gamers making l33t games in their basements."
Now it's just a soulless business trying to milk people out of their money. At least 90% of it is.

As for the console gamers getting the blame, and I said before, the problem is that if it weren't for consoles, then gaming wouldn't have gone mainstream, and hence it could have still been left uncorrupted by the corporate world. It's not that console gamers aren't "hardcore gamers" it's that 90% casual gamers are console gamers, which unfortunately leads to the misunderstanding that all console gamers are brainless twats. (which isn't true of course)

Do you realise just how long consoles have actually been around for? NES, Sega Master System. A good twenty years that I remember (a quick google shows they were around as early as 1983!). Not including the plug in console type machines that had 20+ TV games preinstalled like Pong. Some go back as far as the early 70's. We're actually coming up to our eigth generation of consoles now.

Consoles didn't make gaming any more mainstream than it currently is, greed did.

How can you complain about the simplification of a game that you won't even get to play for another 6 months though?

And this thread is just a continuation of the "PC gamers who haven't found a game worthy of gracing their CD try since 1993" weekly whimper-fest. If you stick around long enough, you'll get used to it.

Yes.

Tandy Computer and Commodore were the original systems. Those were more like Word Processors, but I remember going into the Shack and playing on those trying to get my folks to buy one. But gaming really started on Coin Op systems. Pong, Night Driver etc, then Atari realized they could bring the Console into people's living rooms.

Coleco and Activision soon followed suit. Then Sega. Coleco sold out to Nintendo, Nintendo got Sony started. 3DO had their unit and on and on. The reason everyone did this was to showcase their own products with a smattering of titles they thought would sell well.

Nothing wrong with that and I love consoles. Will always have a soft spot for them. I just think that if a developer wants to have their title be accessible that they follow through with that ideal. What I see going on is not good for the industry. The point is to grow and to showcase the talent and make money doing it.

Just imagine where we would be right now if Doom were developed primarily for Console. We'd still be back in the stone age of Yar's Revenge, Asteroids and Space Invaders. Instead we have games that can stress the hell out of a PC. Metro 2033? That game right there will make my system weep in less than 1 hour. It's games like this that keep me on PC. I want to see MORE of that and less of GTA IV type of offerings.

If that's wrong, lord help me I don't want to be right.

I can't believe that you (at least partially) agree with me Pat

But I still (partially) disagree with you, console gaming has always been the big guy since the beginning and the Odyssey and then the Atari 2600, in fact during that time and up to the end of the 80's, most games on PC/microcomputers were port from arcade systems or consoles, in fact most microcomputers had a joystick port and their games were meant to be played with a joystick/joypad.

It's really only when PCs began to have truly better hardware (compared to the NES) that came the age of PC exclusives, also driven by sharewares, then the first FPS (which were all ported to consoles, some being better than their DOS counterparts).

Consoles have always been the bigger market, but the "mainstream" gamer of the time was quite a lot different than he is now, he was used to "hardcore" games and higher difficulty. As the gaming market grew, people with less passion and dedication began to play games, so publishers began to force their devellopers to dumb down the games, it truly began on the 32bit consoles and then continued in full force up until now. The PC market being a niche didn't have this problem as much but it came onto the platform too, just a bit after the consoles.

Since then the targeted consumer has completely changed, he used to be male, very dedicated to his hobby and ready to learn complex rules and gameplay. Now he is of both genders, consider gaming just a side thing in his spare time and clearly will be frustrated if games had the same rules and dificulty they had before. The older and more serious crowd has also massively shifted from the PC to consoles in the last two console generations, which makes develloping PC exclusives more and more hazardous, so developers are forced by their boss (publishers) to develop for their new core audience even if they are old schoold PC (or console for that matter) developer at heart.

All that matters is if the game is fun enough for it to be worth the price you paid for it. Seriously who cares what it runs on as long as you can play it and you like it?

The games are targeting consoles, PC gamers are lucky to get them at all, let alone have them customer tailored for the PC as well. If PCs were just as strong of a platform for multi-platform games I'm sure it would get more love.

I'm not sure where you guys get off thinking the existing multi-platform development method is not sufficient.
1.) Developers make the game
2.) Customers buy and the majority enjoy the game

If most people are happy with the games, the developer has succeeded, and if you want more than that, tough luck, go spend your money elsewhere. I'm tired of people complaining about games that most people find perfectly fine.
