I7 2600K downclocking while under load

Thread Starter
My 2600K is running great at 4.8 Ghz, but it downclocks every few seconds to 3.4 for a split second and then jumps back up to 4.8.

I have C1, C3,C6, all of that power saving stuff turned off.

im using an asus P8P67M-Pro mobo. updated to bios 0713 today but that didnt change anything.

temps are staying in the mid-70's C.

any ideas?

Did you actually turn the multiplier up or just turn up the turbo boost level? I know on my gigabyte UD3 I have both options.

Not a stable overclock would be my guess, or a shoddy power supply.

my OC was stable in Prime95 for over a day and the PSU is an XFX 650 watter that is brand new. I mean it works great but i notice it downclock while watching it.

It really seems like a thermal throttle but i turned off the thermal monitoring setting in the Bios and its not getting all that hot.

Speedstep is the actual thing that downclocks the cpu, try disabling that and see if it still downclocks. I usually leave it on, no sense in running the overclock at the speed all the time, it helps overall temps when it is enabled and iirc doesn't effect the overclock.

i turned off speed step and it is still doing it.

It literally drops from 4.8 down to 3.4 every 10 secs for a second and then goes back up to 4.8

my highest temp seen is 75C on one core.

this is really irritating. this is a folding rig so the little drops in speed are messing up the tpf that i could be getting.

any other ideas?

It is something unstable in your core.
I'd RMA it, and get a new one.
There is no reason it should be doing that.

If your voltage isn't dropping with it... it is the chip. If your voltage is dropping randomly, it should be the power supply.

I take it back... there is a small chance it could be the motherboard... but i doubt it

ok, so each time that it downclocks, the core voltage does drop with it, back to the stock voltage.

i did just realize that my psu fan was a bit blocked and it was pretty warm, i fixed that so i will wait and see if that helps. if not you thin its the psu that is messed up?

ok so i borrowed a PSU from a friend and tried it out, i still get the downclocking while under load.

So you guys think its my chip? I bought the 2 year replacement plan from MicroCenter so i can just take it to them and get a new chip.

I'm not familiar with that board, although the M isn't the best for overclocking, as voltages can not be set directly, but some people still like it as a cheap board. Did you increase the cpu power and amps/current limits to 200 or 250? (TDP/TDC i think).
