Haha, I did say that and got sidetracked just as easily. I'll focus on that a bit more this week. We can compare together once your cards have arrived.

Nice.. Well I am three to four days from receiving my 3 x 3GB GTX 580's to replace my current 3 x 1.5GB MSI GTX 580's .. I will definitely be keen to update the website with my results on various games, based on 7680 x 1440 resolution (3 x 27" Dell's) with AntiAliasing at various levels and without AntiAliasing. ;-)

Just out of curiosity, how and why are you using Quadro 275.36 drivers instead of the official Windows 7 Pro Drivers for our hardware? Are they significantly faster with the Quadro Drivers? How do I download them and install them if they are heaps faster?

You got my attention on this quadro issue ;-)

Cheers

Nickolas

Please do; I am considering a 3GB one right now as my current card doesn't like high resolutions.

And a lot of those games forced AA doesn't work in ... Crysis, Metro, Mafia 2, Dead Space 2, GTAIV, I know off-hand you cannot force AA on. It may not change anything to do so, but if it doesn't work, it's best not to do so

When it comes to AA, it's impossible to be 'consistent'. Different engines do it differently, or some won't do it at all. Using the in-game AA, and leaving NVCP on 'use app settings', is the closest thing to consistency you're going to be able to get

Sad fact of the matter is, forcing AA through NVCP only rarely actually 'works' nowadays.
At first I was kinda bummed to hear this, because I'm lazy and just force max settings in NV panel instead of tinkering with games...
but now I'm not sure how you are so absolute in concluding that forcing AA through NVCP rarely works these days, when you even said it's only happened to you with one game and haven't tested any other games, and it was years ago to boot. So how are you so "matter of fact" about this, despite no current testing?

I am going to be in the possession of three 1.5GB 580s by Monday. I will run some tests at 1080p x 3 and that resolution with 3D enabled.

Personally I am skeptical that 3GB is of any benefit in all but two or three games unless you feel the need to run more than 4x MSAA, maybe more than 2x MSAA. I'm also not convinced that MSAA matters as much as it once did, given that most games in recent years use shaders and transparent textures that are unaffected by MSAA anyway.

At any rate, we'll see. I think so long as I can run 2x MSAA in almost everything, I'll be happy. If not, I'll considering moving to the 3GB variants, but I'm wary of spending $550 x 3 six months away from Kepler when regular 580s have dropped to just $440 after rebate.

There are a few games that use more than your available 1.5GB even without AA, I know this because I started off with 3x 1.5GB models myself.

Once my results are compiled, along with FattyBoomba's and your own, we'll get a clearer picture.

But what happens in these games? Do you see hitching and stuttering? Is the "extra" non-fitting vRAM cached on the hard drive or into system memory?

With Crysis 2, for instance, it turned out that the numbers were irrelevant because the game simply loaded as much vRAM as it could, not as much as it needed.

The other interesting point is that 480 and 580 1.5GB Tri-SLI scales almost perfectly even in these Surround situations where you are out of vRAM, which means that it's not necessarily even a bottleneck.

So it will be good to find some concrete answers rather than blanket generalizations about how the vRAM being full actually impacts gameplay.

I know 3D has an extra vRAM overhead of 10 to 20% but I read that you can't enable AA with 3DVS, so I don't know that my tests there will be useful.

These are the exact same questions I have tried to find answers to ever since I got wind of the 3GB cards being released.

I'm in agreement with you in that it seems the only times where severe hitching and stuttering mainly happen are when AA levels are set at medium/high levels and beyond. Games which are modified with high resolution texture packs are also exceptions to the norm as well.

Looking over [H]'s recent review of the MSI 3G Lightning, only Dragon Age 2 and Metro 2033 showed detrimental effects due to the VRAM bottleneck:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/..._card_review/5
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/...card_review/10

So while there are actual games out there that do take a significant hit, the main point really seems to be for people to just be cognizant of what settings they are using and tweak accordingly to align with their performance expectations. I'm willing to bet that most people, myself included, would be hard pressed to tell the difference between 8X MSAA and 2X-4X while actually playing (not analyzing) their games; whereas, the difference between 60fps and 40fps or lower is much more pronounced and easily detectable.

I think if everyone's testing is done on regular 2D Surround with 2X AA (or 4X max), then the results would be more uniform and realistically applicable for the majority of users.

Personally, I feel that I am lacking more in raw GPU power as opposed to VRAM capacity in the select few games where performance is an issue. The results you guys post will help me determine whether the next card should be a third GTX 580, or wait until Kepler (or later) as I feel I am too far in with my current cards to sell them off at a significant loss and rebuy everything all over again.

Right, and as I've said elsewhere, I have never bothered with 8x MSAA over 4x MSAA. The only AA mode worth the effort that's higher than 4x MSAA is supersampling, which can't be pushed by any GPU configuration in any modern game across three screens anyway.

And in that [H] review, the only game that was actually "limited" was DAO 2 at 8x MSAA - Metro 2033 was limited only if you turn on that ridiculous depth of field option, which as far as I know, no one even likes.
