So you liek to use AA and Surround?? 3GB GTX580 SLi VRAM Usage in 17 games... - Page 6

Since I have two 580s and three monitors lying around, I decided I might as well check a little vRAM usage while waiting for the third card.

In Bad Company 2 with everything maxed at 4x MSAA, vRAM registered at max of ~1250MB out of three maps I tried, including the largest, Heavy Metal. Performance was 60-75 FPS with HBAO off, since that **** does nothing I can notice. (VRAM test was with HBAO on and off, made no difference.)

In Crysis 2 with everything maxed + DX11 + textures, vRAM stayed at 1512MB (probably the max). Obviously the game ran slowly, 25-30 FPS, but at no point was it "stuttering" or "choking" - it was just slow, as one would expect.

Also ran Heaven 2.1 with 4x MSAA/16x AF, rest was regular settings. Max vRAM usage was 1470MB vRAM. Average FPS was 38. At 8x MSAA, however, the thing hard crashed. I watched the G15 LCD as the vRAM numbers kept ramping up until it reached ~1530MB as the software was loading and then it got caught in a sound loop and rebooted.

Will test out Arkham, JC2, and Metro - and the two games above again - when the third card arrives tomorrow.

I didn't use benchmarks or multiplayer levels for my testing, but your results are definitely welcome.

HI CH_Skyline,

Could you possibly tell us why (the benefit over standard drivers) and how (how you go about downloading and installing) you are using Quadro 275.36 drivers for your setup?

I was wondering if I should do the same for my system with my new 3GB cards that are coming early next week, and how I will see things improve ;-)

Cheers

Nick

LOL, I know, I hate it with passion - they should have two ports you can select from, So if you have a crap PC, you can choose the console port, and If you've got a better, more expensive PC then choose the PC Port.

I just finished playing splinter cell conviction in surround mode @ 5942x1080 Very cool game with surround. It also used 2.6gb of RAM!!!!!

I haven't had a single hiccup when a game works in surround. when it doesn't work...it's not even playable. I'm looking at you, Black Ops!!!

Black Ops doesn't work for you? What's the story? I've personally never had an issue with that game, unless you need a FoV fix...

AFAIK Black Ops won't work online, nor will any other recent COD games, because Widescreen Fixer didn't keep up with the endless patches.

Unfortunately that is the issue with only one person working on a project like the Widescreen Fixer. Dopefish seems to be a busy guy, but is pretty good about making updates if they are requested.

Yeah it's certainly not his fault. It's just pathetic that this "high-end" tech depends on one guy for some of the world's biggest games to work with it, while neither company does anything on that front.

Below you'll find a few benchmarks using Tri-SLI 580 at 3 x 1080p. I think it bears out my general conclusion: if you're OK with 2-4x MSAA and high-very high settings, there's no need to get 3 GB cards and 1.5 GB will suffice.

Even in the scenarios where you hit max vRAM limit, it's not choking performance, based on the FPS and my own observations watching the benchmarks. I don't know if this is because the engine is smart about it or because the extra data is offloaded to surplus RAM rather than the HDD.

There are a couple exceptions - 8x MSAA with Heaven benchmark will hard crash the machine, and according to [H], DAO2 with 8x MSAA chokes 1.5 GB vRAM - but that's outside the 2x to 4x MSAA parameters that I find sufficient.

JUST CAUSE 2 Max settings + 4x MSAA, 39.2 FPS AVG, 1112 MB max Vram

ARKHAM Max settings + normal physx + 4x MSAA: 117 FPS, 1527 MB max vRAM

BAD COMPANY 2 Max settings + 4x MSAA MP MAP HEAVY METAL: 1250 MB max RAM

Note: I didn't bother running with 3DVision because Nvidia software appears to impose a 2x AA limit when running 3D and Surround. It's not clear to me that it succeeds in doing so all the time, so it's an unnecessary variable. 3D does impose a 10-20% vRAM overhead, but that may or may not be canceled out by running at 2x AA and the fact that you can't notice aliasing as much with 3D on.
