The problem most people have is, they excpect superb graphics, but graphics means little if the game is boring...
There have been many different FPS games, and some stuck out much more than others, yet surprisingly, some are still playing very old and poor graphic games like NWN, Counterstrike, and you couldn't convince them players those games sucked, even though there are much better graphical games on the market.... Like BFBC2, COD, etc..
It's because a game isn't really only tied to graphics, it's more tied to how fun it is, and really players care more about enjoying the game than sweating over their keyboard over intense action that makes you sit up in your chair and intensely focus..
If duke nukem is fun, people will buy it, just like they did GTA / Crysis, etc., regardless of graphics..
I just recently played through Crysis 2, and that game was really boring. Graphics were great. Story was boring, gameplay was okay, but it was so repetitive. Like, stealth, flank, shoot, stealth, flank, take, shoot...
Now, I look forward to Duke Nukem Forever
I played through the side scroller, 3D, Time To Kill and Land Of The Babes, and I was ALWAYS entertained. Even after 10 times of going through the games.
Gonna be great to see Duke in action again, as a matter of fact: "Hmm... Won't budge!"
