Which version Ubuntu is for me?

Thread Starter
I am working with getting my Ubuntu rig setup for smp folding and I can see I have already done two things different and I wonder if I should follow the guide exactly, what I have done, I down loaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit version. The OCN guide and a second one I found use version 10.04 64 bit version, should I start over and use 10.04 64 bit?

When I installed 11.04 the page file setup screen went by so fast I did not notice or remember what was setup, I conclude it is very important to get the page file settings correct?

Should I only use 10.04 and should I only use 64 bit? It would be simple to stop now and make the change. 11.04 looks like a real nice OS and my inop (inop under windows) 8800GT works fine with the Ubuntu 173 drivers, so I am quite pleased already

You will need a x64 version; Ubuntu or Fedora would be a good distro to start with.

I kind of thought the issue would be the 64/32 question and not the distro, thanks.

Even though I am having issues learning how to correctly type commands in terminal I am going to give Ubuntu 11.04 a very postive rating from a first look aspect. Now if I could ever figure out how to correctly type in terminal I could start smp folding. I think getting past this terminal issue will be a good step in making me accept all three OSes (I already like MS and OSX). If this OS will give the team 10% more ppd simply from an OS change I think more should take a second look.I know if I keep at it I will discover a tutorial about using terminal (I mean an answer to my exact issue). I have a book comming tomorrow.

11.04 has a GUI allot like Windows, I like it also. The problem with 11.04 is you can not use the BSF scheduler you will notice that your CPU is not being used 100% all of the time there are continues dips in cores. If you use the BFS scheduler the CPU will be 100% all of the time, You will gain between 5 and 30 sec per frame using the BFS scheduler. As far as typing the commands correctly COPY AND PASTE it works great.

Is the fact that 11.04 is a lot like windows the reason I like it? sounds reasonable.

EDIT: For folding is Ubuntu version 10.04 the latest one to use because of this BSF scheduler issue?

Well this is rather odd, a definitive answer in regards to what Linux distro to use. The rule is for Ubuntu do not use any version latter than 10.10 or there will be cpu usage issues that hurt your tpf. It seems that the "rawest" version of Linux is the best in regards to folding. When the distro becomes civilized it gives up a bit for this civility.
