Overclocking my laptop? NOOB here

Okay, so I have a new laptop and I don't know if its okay to overclock it for some extra performance. I guess I don't really game or anything I just like to tinker with stuff.

So far my only experience overclocking is my android phone..

That being said can/should I overclock my laptop. Here is my processor:

ProcessorIntel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz, 2001 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

Any input would be appreciated, I look forward to learning more about overclocking.

You cannot overclock a laptop, because for one the BIOS is locked, and second, a laptop does not have the thermal cooling abilities that are enough to overclock, so even if you overclock at the windows level, it is highly ill advised as it may cause permanent damage to your notebook, then again, you have one of the best mobile processors out there, so i dont think you need to overclock that, if you want to learn about overclocking, you must first build yourself a brand new desktop computer, and grab a nice cooler to do it. overclocking is software, and there is no software where there is no hardware am i right? and BTW welcome to OCN =D

What he said pretty much. Overclocking a laptop is a bad idea.

Thank you both for input. I thought it might be a bad idea due to the cooling. I would like to try to build an actual desktop I've already taken apart an entire laptop, removed the processor and lapped and thermal pasted my heat sink for the processor on my old laptop so I have some experience with components. I had to change out the mainboard so it was a requirement certainly not for fun.

I overclocked my laptop (Alienware m11x), had to do a pin mod, but I got it up to 1.92ghz (from 1.3ghz) they let you overclock to 1.6 through the bios, but the rest requires a pin mod which you have to cut a pin on the PLL chip.

I thought it might be easy because of the built in turbo boost feature. Too bad I guess. I have excellent soldering skills I rework RC car circuit boards as a side job, though, I dunno if I want to go that in depth I was hoping it could be done through the bios.

Some have had success with ClockGen on laptops. But softclocking is unstable, buggy, and usually doesn't work.

i have no idea why people are saying what theyre saying. it is as if they have absolutely no experience with such things and basing their response off of someone else.

you can overclock a laptop and it is perfectly fine to do so. the only problems is that most venders restrict you from the bios overclocking and that the cooling usually restricts you from pushing the system as far as it could.

typically, if you have a dedicated gpu, you can overclock that with software like you do on a pc. however, watch your temps and research what other people got on their overclock.

asus allows for bios overclocking. im not sure if targas does, but maybe. alienware does on some models. asus uses a preset overclock setting. you load the bios and select a 5, 10, or some other interval of 5% overclock. again, watch you temps and do long stress tests.

based on what i read here, these members have no idea what they are talking about.

I didnt voice against it at all, I am on a overclocked laptop right now as we speak. just was a pain to do with a pinmod, but when it was done gave me a 20% more overclock on my cpu.
