Friend having issues with DDR2 775 RAM

My friend is running a C2Q 9650 CPU with (I think) 4 GB of DDR2, he just mentioned that when he boots his system windows fails to start and it goes into startup repair. He tries to run a system restore and he says it gives him an error 0x(specific error code here). He says he has been having issues reported by memtest 86 but he doesn't overclock at all so I doubt it is instability. Sorry I have so little info but I think he is away from his computer and I'm just getting this info from texts. I know very little about RAM but I didn't think it could have software issues so is this an instability thing or is the RAM dying?

Sound's like one of the stick's may have died? Did you happen to look at the windows index and see if all the ram was being read?

I haven't had the chance to look at the computer or anything so I don't know much. I told him to try running the system with a single stick to see if that fixes things but beyond that I am completely lost.

If memtest 86 is showing errors he probably has a bad stick of ram.Have him pull one and run memtest too figure out which one it is.Sometimes start up repair takes 3 or 4 tries for it too work.Once he can pass memtest.

like everyone else has said... he probably has a bad stick... tell him to boot into bios... if it shows all four sticks then try the sticks one at a time to find out witch one is bad... if it doesnt show all of the sticks in his bios, its should tell him witch ones are there and witch are not... then look up the lane number in the manual, and pull out the faulty stick... do you know what mobo he has so i can be more specific?
