Decent Card with Low TDP

Thread Starter
Hi All,

I'm looking at some video cards for my system and need some advice.
I'm playing at 1440x900 and want to play most new titles with decent quality.
Also, a concern is the power consumption. I want a card that's not a power hog (as low power consumption as possible) but still give good performance.

Anyway, here are my choices:
PowerColor 6670: around $107 at 63w TDP (will this be enough)
PowerColor 6770: around $127 at 108w TDP
PowerColor 6790: around $146 at 150w TDP
MSI R6850: around $204 at 127w TDP (will my X3 440 handle this)

I have limited choices here as you can see from my options, but feel free to recommend other cards.

Are TDPs correct?

Thanks!
Toto

If i was you i would definitely go with the 6850, its a great card and your CPU should be able to handle it fine @3.3GHz.

Dont even think of getting a card from 6700 series. Try to get a 6850 at least or go with the much popular GTx460, I think its TDP is about 150W or close, you can find a few here on OCN for good bargain. I myself am getting two from a member here. 460 or 6850 would be good solutions.

I would go with either a 5770, a 6850, or a 460.

I have a feeling that the 6850 is an overkill for my system, only 1440x900 res.
But if TDPs are correct, then definitely 6850>6790, just have to shell out more cash.

What's wrong with the 6700 series? I thought it was just rebadged 5700 series with lower TDP?

A 6850 isn't necessary "overkill" for 1440x900 resolution. It should dominate any games out right now, but also be able to easily run anything for several years at that resolution.

I also see nothing wrong with the 6770. >_>

Why not get a used 5770 for cheap?

1440x900 is a pretty small res for even a 6850, what kind of games are you going to be playing?

pretty sure 6700 series is a straight re-badging, my 5770 has a TDP of 108 and so does the 6770....
The 6850 isn't overkill for your system at all, i would even say going up to a 6870 would be good but that is starting to hike the prices up a bit, a 6850 will be great at that res, you will be able to pretty much max everything but the most demanding games and it should last you for at least a year, maybe 18 months.

A GTX 460 as mentioned above is another good choice, when over clocked ( and they over clock like beasts ) they will go head to head with an over clocked 6850, between the two i would just go with the one you can find cheaper.

I'm playing Starcraft 2, Civilization V and maybe Diablo 3.
I would also like to try new FPS games like Modern Warfare and maybe Need for Speed Shift.

Is it ok to buy used cards?

Are my TDPs accurate?

I may look into GTX 460 with my retailer.
