low power video cards

Thread Starter
Hey I have a friend who has a dell slim 530s pc and wants to upgrade the video card. the problem is is that he needs a low-profile card that is low wattage. the PSU installed only puts out 250W. I have looked everywhere and hopeing that the guys on OCN can help me out. If you find any card that will play Rift and will meet the psu and form factor standards please link a website.

thanks everyone

Nvidia Gt 220 i reckon, my brother has one in a 300W system works fine. Can play most games on medium on his Pentium 4

ok i was looking at something like that. I know that nvidia reccomends a wattage and if the psu isnt powerfull enough it can cause major problems. but thanks for the suggestion

Honestly if your going by recommended wattage- there isnt a dedicated GPU for 250W. Nvidia recommends minimum 300w on even GT210, AMD usually recommends 400W for all their lowend stuff.

Upgrade PSU.

But the GT220 would probably work.

Hooked my femgamer friend up with a 9600 from Sparkle. Was low profile and fit in her Dell C521. But I had to go at the MOSFET heatsink with a dremel to get it to fit. Only had one slot low profile available for video thanks to dell not really know where to place a NB HS.

It burned up. Replaced with a Spark GT 430 and it seems to be running MUCH better than the 9600 and is single slot, no power required, with a nice and flush single fan. Not seein' it on newegg though. Here it is on

yea i dont even know if upgrading the psu is possible bc its like half the size of a regular psu because of the case form. i know i hate dell pcs and never recomend others to buy them. the GT220 looks like its gonna be the best. I just want to see what other ppl have that can run on low power. was looking at a gt 9600 but i dont know if its any lower than that GT220.

oh also he also wants to run dual montiors he has two VGA monitors and i know that the adapters can be used as well.

If the video card doesn't have PCI-E power connectors, you're good to go man.

If the PSU can power the system but only give off say 50 of the 75 watts minimum spec for PCI-E on the Mobo that's the manufactures problem and a HUGE design flaw. Just get what fits. The dell that the 9600 was in only had a 300W psu as well worked fine with no artifacts or power starvations, and even moderately OC'd.

The PSU form factor you might be thinking of for SFF PC's is "SFX"

yea i looked at dells website and of course there is nothing worth looking at no really detailed specs. all the cards i looked at dont have any power connections and im not sure what the mobo can do eather. i may have to look into upgrading the psu

also its a dell do they still have the mobo power pins switched.

the PSU is not a problem. You can run even a HD 5770 very nicely with a 300W PSU.

but these:

might be pretty nice.

Don't get the 220gt it's complete garbage.
