Ugh, no matter how I try to word the above two sentences I can't seem to figure out a way to convey in a civil tone that I was mildly offended by your response to my post, but it arose out of the way the information is nested in post #15 and I see now you weren't just trolling, but it seemed that way at the time. I still stand by my assertion that simply polishing the two mating surfaces to fill in the microscopic defects, leaving virtually no intervening layer of TIM, is a viable method with certain coolers - with direct contact coolers being an obvious exception.
It depends on how level the surfaces are though. If you had nearly perfectly flat, lapped, and mated surfaces, then yes, I agree, all you need is a minuscule amount of TIM to fill in the microscopic crevices on the surfaces--but if you have either imperfect or non-flat surfaces, as was described by the OP link (most IHS's are concave), then this method isn't necessarily as good or better. It really just depends on the person's specific case.

Which makes all of these "TIM application" methods just mere suggestions that ought to work for pretty much any situation. Doesn't mean that they'll work THE BEST for ALL situations.

a perfectly lapped surface doesn't need any TIM this as been proven on OCN, when he did use TIM on his perfectly lapped cpu and cooler he only got a 2c drop.

This has been thrown around SO many times.
There used to be a video on here. Some skinny dude with a mustache.

In the case of AS5:

1. Wash hand thoroughly
2. Wipe finger with 90% ISO Alcohol
3. Run THIN layer across IHS EVENLY
4. Apply about a BB sized drop to heatsink
5. Rub evenly into heatsink
6. Using a clean paper towel, lightly rub heatsink base with the grain. Evenly cover the grooves a light silver, whilst removing excess AS5
7. Install heatsink.

I've always used the tiny dot method. It isn't enough for all of the heat spreader, but this doesn't matter, so long as it covers the die of the chip underneath. Below the sections of the chip without the paste there is nothing worth cooling anyway. There is no need to spread the paste, just press the heatsink down on it and it will squash it into a circle. Then use that.

Less paste is always better, you only need enough to fill in the surface imperfections, any more will stop the heat from passing onto the sink as easily. The problem with spreading paste is that it applies too much.

What I want to know is what is the best way to remove the paste. I want to do it on my card, since they cheaped out and used a thermal pad. I've always used kitchen paper, but it doesn't actually work all that well.

Rubbing alcohol or Arcticlean (better) and rub with a coffee filter or lintless cloth.

It's been pointed out multiple times in this thread that the spreading method is one of the worst.
