[HS] What is the Best Way to Apply Thermal Compound? - Page 8

DONT LAP !! know why ? ill talk about i7 CPU's

when u take ur i7 cpu in ur hands, and loook at it? or test it with a razor , u find that is not perfect flat! then some ppl will just lap, BUT, i think INTEL has a reason why they did these cpu this way, CUZ, the mother board bracket ,when pushed down, will easy change the shape of cpu's ISH , form NOT perfect flat to a more perfect flat. understand what im saying? u'r pc will not run with ur cpu in ur hands, the HIS will bend when mounted on BM.
SO when you LAP u will get a perfect HIS but only in ur hands, when mounted the top and bottom of the IHS will touch the heatsink,
Where i know this? cuz i did it my self with an i7 950, and i spent so much time doing it until i realised im wrong,
i took a small cell phone screen, and took off the crystal that was the size of the IHS , then applied on the cpu in my hands and seen perfect flat, then on MB and shape changed, so there we go.
and a good whay of appling TIM, at least for me.
im using AS5 and noctua d14, on a i7 980, drop the as5 any way i want, dostn matter , rise drop, been drop, stripe, no. After i do that, i heat up the heatsink with fire, i take it to 70 80 degrees, so when i mount it on the IHS the AS5 will spread much much better and between the Heatsink and IHS will remain only the TIM is neaded.
sorry for my bad english and cheers

i just bought a sandybridge CPU it seems the intel fan comes with some type of thermal paste. should i just stick with this or use some other type of thermal paste.

Am I the only one who spreads it evenly with a plastic card before putting on a heatsink?

There is plenty of evidence from hundreds of hobbyists on dozens of hardware sites that prove that lapping gives better temps.

Do you have any evidence? Perhaps a snippet from Intel, or motherboard manufacturers that states how their CPU warps when a heatsink is applied to it?

There really isn't much room for give in CPU's--they're not really designed to bend...so I'm vehemently skeptical about this...and I'm sure everyone else that's lapped a CPU and gotten better temps would disagree with your statement above.

this http://www.overclock.net/air-cooling...ml#post8378679

this is a post form me long time ago.
the MB i am talking about is asus deluxe v2 and i can bet this is whats happening when the brackets of the MB are pusshed over the ihs, at least thats what happens with this MB . Who know maybe that bracket is to powerfull and changes the shape of IHS , but some ppl do realise that it takes a little bit o presure to mount the CPU on the MB and the ihs is made of copper not steel. nut any way, the fact is a fact, and now i cant prove it, as i dont have the i7 950 (lapped cpu) any more, and my actual i7 980x is not lapped , and i will not. so in my opinion to lap a cpu is better to do it mounted on MB, wich is imposible,
all this may sound crazy, but it really happend to me, (maybe i lapped like a crazy guy all the ihs? not really)
be sure i spend allot of time and money on lapping tools
so any way, i trust INTEL that when they spend so much money into CPU's and tech, they could make so easy the IHS flat like glass

Dude might have the right idea.

Sometimes people on these enthusiast sites get so caught up in saying the same thing over and over and over (to the point of being wrong)... like how AS5 is the best tim, gentle typhoons will drastically reduce sound, etc.

Read things with an open mind and don't repeat the same things over and over.
