BC2 ignoring settings.ini

Why hi guys,

I've been having some troubles with BFBC2. I recently installed it, updated it, and when I started the game my graphics (and possibly also sound) settings constantly get reset. Furthermore when in-game sounds seem to be missing. I'm using a headset and when I spot someone or 'assign' a task for my squad there is no voice command or anything, and also the explosions seem a bit soft.

For the sound problem I read that you need to change in settings.ini the speaker count to two. Can anyone confirm this?

Changing the settings.ini file however seems futile, these next step by step descriptions/diagnostic steps should clarify some things:

When I change the settings in-game the settings apply (can you change the speaker count in-game?) but at restart they disappear.
When I found my settings file, (located in a folder named BFBC2 on the root of my second partition), I changed the resolution and some other things and at game start the settings disappeared/reverted.
Noticed multiple settings.ini files, changed all of them identically but with the same result.
Deleted the folder and launched the game, as expected stock results and the files were recreated.
Changed all the settings again and now set the folder, and all sub folders, to read-only. The game launched with stock settings, again! Utterly confused I checked the files but nothing was changed/reverted.

My question thus is: Why does BC2 seem to ignore the file and by stock try to overwrite it?

Would reinstall if I were you. Tried it with the update once. Couldn't install it. Because I hadn't got it proper installed on my PC. Else see if you can repair, sometimes works for these smaller problems.
