Is this possible? 4x5850/5830's on $90 Mobo using PCI-E x1 "dremel" mod

Using this mobo and 2 of these adapters, would i be able to do what i described in the title? I would mod the adapters to fit the x16 cards, then plug it all in.

Would i lose a lot of performance adding a fourth card, making this pointless? I read on a site that you can run 3 cards on this mobo doing the mod. But im guessing they didnt say 4 for a reason. Maybe they didnt notice the top PCI-E x1 slot?

What wattage PSU would i need? Should i use 2(its cheaper)?

Of course, these cards will run by themselves and not crossfire. And im asking whether this is possible because i thought it would be a amazing bang for buck F@H or mining rig.

Edit: Would it also be possible to use the x16 @ x8 cards in crossfire, even with the other two cards?

Edit2: How about 4x6870's?

Edit3: This is for those of you who don't know what the "dremel" mod im talking about is. It can also be done by cutting the graphics card(which i wont be doing) as seen here.

I have this mobo and was able to crossfire 2x 5850's no problem, idk how well it would work with your situation though, doesnt seem likely but Maybe possible.

edit:: the x8 lane shows no real decrease in performance. from x8 to x16 is very marginal ~ about +/- 5fps depending on the game.

if you plugged them into 1 x speed pcie lanes they would be awfully slow and you would be wasting your money. dont buy 4 cards, get 2 and a decent mobo.

Are you sure?

PPD Readings may fluctuate, so its better to look at Minutes/% to see if the cards perform the same on X1/x16
THIS MEANS THERE IS NO PERFORMANCE LOSS FOR THIS CARD!
I do realize these are more powerful cards though. But i dont think i should lose too much performance. And it would be cheaper overall than getting two systems with 4 5850/5830's total.

he's using a 8400GS in that little dremel showing not a 5xxx Radeon or Nvidia equivelent you'll prolly will see extremely low numbers if this is done or end up not have it work at all. redface.gif.

more effective to just buy a mobo that supports 4 way crossfire plus to save the hassle of possibility destroying your motherboard in the proccess of dremeling the PCI slot or could look for 2 5970's that way, theres alot of options out there then this dremel method which could destroy the motherboard..

I thought F@H was not affected by PCI-E bandwidth?

EDIT: Yep, bandwidth does not affect folding performance:

Well, i learned about this mod here, but it doesn't have proof that there isn't a performance loss.

The dremel mod doesnt destroy your motherboard if you only mod the adapter i linked to in the OP.

So, what wattage PSU would i need?

Thats what i was thinking. So can someone tell me if this would work.

The speeds will cut down by alot.

That would be a cool project though.

well that means it would work for folding and you would not lose out there. but games will be affected. maybe a good 1kw psu?

I don't know if any tests have been done with more recent cards, but the HD 5850 is 4 times as fast as the 8400 GS. I wouldn't conclude that bandwidth has no effect on folding based on a test with such a slow card.
