Can a motherboard brick a graphics card and vice versa?

Hey all,
My friend recently got his gigabyte HD5870 replaced for a gigabyte GTX 480. He has been having issues with his system for a long time now and it seems to have continued after he got the card replaced. At first we thought out was the card alone, but now we are thinking it's the motherboard causing the problems.

He gave the 480 to me to test in my system, and after 1 failed post, and another 2 failed boot ups I got into windows. After installing drivers, I restarted and once it finished losing the desktop icons, it blue screened.

We know that his motherboard is quite cheap and was wondering if it could have bricked the 480? And if the 480 could have done any damage to my system? Will post pics of the blue screen soon.

Should I remove my 470 to check if it damaged the slot? What kind of damage should I be looking for?

It just bluescreened again after I reverted to a backed up image of my windows install from a few months ago since the previous bluescreens caused by the 480 seemed to have corrupted my windows and things weren't working properly.

This happened at stock CPU clocks and stock GPU clocks whilst running folding@home and browsing using Firefox:

I've had a few 0x000007F BSODs with brand new hardware (sig rig) and they went away after replacing the stock intel cooler with a Corsair H100.

You can get that error if something overheats too I think.
