Upgrade time, help me decide!

Right so this year is upgrade year and I've decided I want to go with a crossfire eyefinity setup. I've pretty much decided to go with a 6950 but not sure which is the best way to go with specific models.

I reckon my options are:
2x 6950 Reference Cards - chance to unlock but needs an active adaptor
2x 6950 Flex - Needs no adapter, no unlock, more expensive
1x 6950 flex + 1x Reference card - Cheaper, no unlock, no active adaptor
2x 6950 Custom design (eg the TF III) - Needs active adapter, no unlock (?), fast cards, more expensive

Which one do you reckon I should go for? I've also been reading some opinions that say it's not really worth overclocking in crossfire due to the added heat. But I guess that would depend on your case and cooling more than anything. Also I supppose it's worth mentioning I can get the 6950 TF III for only £5 more than a reference card at the moment on a special offer.

What I see is that you are just asking is what avenue to go down on the same cards with just different configurations. Kind of redundant if you ask me. Kind of like asking which mustang you should go for, gt, cobra, or sheby. My advice to you is first figure out if you want to take the chance to unlock or not. Then figure out if you want to spend the extra for that special cooling.

This got me interested....I got HIS reference card. Bought them pretty much when they first came out. So, to go eyeinfinity, I will have to buy active adapters?

Yes you will need an active adapter unless one of your monitors supports DisplayPort natively.

Yes but you don't necessarily need one of those £100 usb powered active adaptors. For 1080p or 1920x1200 you can get a cheaper one

This thread might be interesting in regards to the gains from unlocking vs. overclocking the 6950.

I decided this as well however the last 2 were removed from my basket as someone with quicker fingers bought them :S

I can still get 2 TFIIIs for quite a bit cheaper than 2 Flexs so I reckon I'll go with that and just pay up for the extra adapter for eyefinity. The Flex edition were good value when I thought I had to pay a lot for a powered active adaptor but now I know I can get one for <£20 I'd prefer the cheaper card.

And thanks Krazzar for that link, it's great information!
