Worthwhile upgrade 5870 to 6950

Thread Starter
and can they still be unlocked? There are a few games, NFS shift mainly that the 5870 is starting to struggle with, not necessarily handling the graphics but will pause and then jump back into the game 5-20 seconds later, I am sure its because the card is running out of memory so I am contemplating upgrading. But don't want to go through the hassle if the 6950 if it wont be a worthy upgrade.

Thanks ahead of time

There's no guarantee of an unlock even with a reference at this point; the only way to be positive would be to buy one used. Honestly though I think you would be better off snagging a second 5870.

That's really a side grade, look for a GTX 580 or even a 570, unless you are bent on the 6950. The Twin Frozr IIIs still unlock.

If there's still any 5870's around for cheap, I'd go that way, but no way in hell i'd buy a new one. BUT if you can sell your 5870 and get a 6950, then sure why not.
I was thinking the very same thing today but I always get a new GPU before I have the chance to SLI/CFX so I'm going to get another 5870, Brilliant card tbh.

You can get em for around 150£ now.

The 570 wouldn't do him much better than a 6950. Even a 6970 wouldn't be a huge jump. He would need a 580 like you said or, of course, a 6990 to be on top haha.

I would just go for crossfire or wait for the next series of GPU's

That would leave me with the same 1Gb of VRAM though wouldnt it?

Crossfire I would stay with the same memory amount and waiting it almost not an option, nothing is worse than fighting for first, having the game freeze for 5 seconds then pop back with me hitting a wall at 180mph

Its wont be a huge upgrade in terms of raw power, but since you seem to be running out of video ram, picking up a 2gb 6950 would be a solid upgrade on your 3 monitors. Well for some things with a bunch of testillation it should be a good upgrade, well heaven benchmark at least.

Some 6950s vs 5870s

Castro Valley, used to live there. Lafayette now.

Had several 5870's and play NFSS with the kids. No, the 6950 wont be much of an upgrade - sidegrade. That game plays better on nvidia BTW. I dont think it is a memorry issue with NFSS since 2 GTX460 7689MB cards in SLI kill the performance of a 5870 in the game. There are a few tracks that pull down frame rates in the game.

EDIT, BTW I tried the 5870 1g and then a 5870 2gb, no doff at all in the game (or really any game that I could see). I didnt see that you migh have EYEFINITY. Look at this link, you need to read it.

Love this town, everything including the bars is in walking distance. Small town feel right in the middle of everything, though its starting to get some population creep coming in from San Leandro/Hayward/Oakland

*Edit* - responded before I realized you had edited yours addressing eyefinity
