ok as seen in this thread my gpu may be dead

http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/103...-may-dead.html
im going to keep trying to get it working
ATM its not outputting display or it may not be getting detected by mobo thus no monitor output

i paid £70 GBP for it and i need a GPU that will be as good or similar in performance as my HD 3870x2-1GB for £70 or less preferably much less i am willing to sell the HD 3870x2 or PX it as some one may be able to get it working

im willing to go ATI or Nvidia

Why do you need a dual card? You're not going to find a worthwhile replacement dual card in your price range. Not new at least. I don't know the pound to dollar conversion, but I'm guessing you're looking in the$ 100 to 125 dollar range. Try to find an Amd 5770, 5830, 5850 extreme(sapphire), or an nvidia 460 or 560(non Ti). I listed a lot of cards because I'm not 100% on the pricing. Something in that range has to fit. Good luck.

If I were you I'd be looking for a secondhand 4890 or similar.
The ATI cards seem to go for less secondhand, in Ireland at least, so they might be your best bet.
Honestly I've had both a 3870x2 and 3870s in CF and I'd say based on online comparisons you couldn't go wrong with anything above a 4870 as long as the price is right.

It's a shame the card is dead though as they're still very capable if you're not using AA.

funny thing is i had the choice between buying the 3870x2 & the 4870 originally but choose the x2 i will look for the 4870 now

What about getting a used AMD HD5770 1GB?

They sell for price in your budget range and are Direct x 11 capable(if you even care for DX11).

Oh I'm not saying it'd be better at everything, just that you won't need driver optimisations as much to get the best of the dual GPUs and it should have better minimum framerates than the x2.

The 4890 is probably the better replacement as it'll come close to GTX460 performance for a whole lot less cash.
Something like a 275 or 285 would be as good as or better than the 4890 if you can find it at the right price, going back a generation or two should save you a lot and all you'd miss out on is directX 11 which honestly doesn't make much difference anyway.

Edit: Or the 5770 too, anything at that sort of performance level should be fine. The main thing is finding something at a good price, I'd let cost and availability make my decision for me if I were you.

Actually, the damage wasn't because they were ebay fans.
Most fans come with a warning to only connect fans to the other end of their molex connectors as the wire can't handle the current a 3870x2 would draw.
If these fans didn't warn you of that, maybe you've got a case for a dispute but if they did I'd say you're out of luck.

I'm not saying that it's your fault because you didn't know and can't be expected to do everything right on the first go round.
It's a crappy way to learn but unfortunately I doubt it's a fault of the fans' manufacturer that it can't supply 15+ Amps of current, very few computer parts actually need that much current and they all usually have a dedicated connector from the PSU.

You might be better off replacing the PSU as well, it could be okay but if it wasn't you'd find out and it wouldn't be fun, it sucks to have this happen but I've had plenty of hardware die on me and the best thing to do is to buy a replacement and learn from it.
