DVD failure?

Moved parts over to a new case. And things seems a little flaky trying to get drivers off of disks (it was for a wireless adapter). Ok went to second computer and got them to a USB. Other things popped up that I was convinced I had a windows corruption, to tried to launch a repair install from original disk.

Installed hanged for the longest time. Restarted once then just let it sit. Finally windows installer (7) said that I had a hardware failure with the DVD or HD. Since I was booting from the disk, I'm sure it is the DVD. (that and it will still launch into windows from the HD's).

Everything shows up in Bios. Checked cables. Powersupply is running well.

So, do I have a DVD drive that went bad?
I think I've had it for about 4-5 yrs. SATA writemaster. I've used it in five builds or so. Anything else that I might have missed? Thanks!

Things to try: use a dvd cleaning disk as optical may be buggard up. (2) try updating firmware of the dvd burner. (C) DL HDtune and run it to rule out the hdd. (4) buy a new burner as they are cheap enough and most likely solve all your problems.

Can't remember exact error. I'll see if I can recreate it.

DVD drive doesn't show up in HDtune. All other drives are showing good heath and no errors (except SSD is throwing odd temps, but that seems fairly common).

When I go to "My Computer" the DVD shows under: "Devices with Removable Storage" (which seems a little odd) when I try to right click on it, the windows freezes and and goes to "not responding"

But it does show in Device Manager as a DVD/CD Drive and it does show in BIOS.

Addition:
Tried to update driver from device manager and it locked up also.

Are you overclocked? Dvd drive will not show in hdtune i meant hdd drive. Clear bios, run memtest86+ with one stick at a time.

Not currently overclocked.
HD Tune checked all drives and they are all running clean.
Not sure what you mean by hdd drive - is that a program?
Went through multiple tests with memtest86+ and both sticks are clean.

Next ideas?

If you've ruled out RAM and HDD as the source of your problems, just try with another burner. This shouldn't be a very difficult diagnostic. If you really want to be sure about your shot, try the DVD drive on another computer.

These things do go out once in a while. Good thing is that they're dirt cheap.

Try changing the sata port and cable for your dvd drive. You may have a bad port or bad cable.
