There's no bluff to call... It's an opinion.

You say that you never know when to use potions. WRong. the game nearly always has your medallion vibrate and geralt with say a few different things. This is a notice that you are about to fight something tough. Thats when you are suppose to be sure to pop potions. You also generally are given a chance to pop potions before you engage in what could possibly end up being combat.

The game doesnt hold your hand, and i respect that, The game wants you to think about your actions, whether its Hmm im about to go talk to the enemy im after, perhaps i should pop a potion in case. Its not like there is a lack of resources to create the ones you want.
In Chpt. 1 the medallion was hit or miss... Your best bet was to remember what parts of the swamp/forest creatures would spawn, since it would vibrate in certain areas regardless of whether or not creatures were there(yes I realize it would also vibrate near places of power).

Except the potion/oil/place of power timer is continuously winding down while talking(a certain pre-fight convo in Chpt 1 had my oils and places of power augments gone by the time combat broke out - I can give other more specific examples if you like)... That is a bad design implementation/oversight regardless of how much you like the game.

Creating potions, while easy enough, is not intuitive. You have to replace the ingredients you wish to swap out each and every time you create a new potion. Oh and you can't create more than one at a time...

Also if you are getting swarmed in enemies, you are doing it wrong. You can take the skills that allow you to block from any direction and reduce all damage taken during a block to zero.
Maybe it was fixed with the patch... But I played day 1 on hard and the nekkers in Chpt. 1 would swarm the crap out of you. I was in the swamp and about 10(including 3 nekker warriors) would swarm me. Sure I readjusted my tactics, but blocking enemies in front of you would not help you when they were hitting you from behind(two hit kills on hard) - what's more the ability to block is tied to you vigor(you can only block so many times)... Say what you will, but the first game had a backflip/cartwheel ability. I think it would have been nice to see in this game as well.

Then you also have the ability to put a trap behind you, and use freezing, burning, stunning bombs that effect areas. Toss a burning bomb behind you in a hallway and you cut off enemies from going through it, they wont run through the fire, unless they cant be hurt by it. If you do get surrounded, bust out a freezing or stunning bomb that will allow you to escape.

Like i said, the game gives you the tools to handle every situation, and in many different ways. What it doesnt do is make it easy, or hold your hand.

People complaining about the difficulty, either arent very good, arent using all the tools at their disposal, or arent paying attention.
Reading comprehension, it's a must! I was complaining about the uneven difficulty, IE how Geralt becomes massively overpowered... Or was combat still challenging for you past chapter 1? Personally, I was a juggernaut by then and my swarming complaint entirely moot.

The witcher 2 also requires to full playthroughs in order to get the entire story, because your actions will cause you to see and meet different people in the world.
Already mentioned C&C and it's impact so preaching to the choir, why?

This discussion is entirely off topic, if you wish to continue let's move it somewhere else.

-EDIT-

@ OP

Forgot to mention, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Still one of my favorite games of all time. Just make sure you get Wesp's latest patch(he's been patching the game for years now). Also, there are some mods to be found on Moddb and planet vampire.

The witcher 2 combat isn't difficult. It's just Geralt has the reflex of a 80 year old. And the rolling... L O L. Now that's a great hack and slash mechanic, roll on the floor every two seconds.

Downloading demos for the following :
-Divinity 2
-Risen
-Silverfall
-The last Remnant

How is Fable III? I loved the first one and the second wasn't a total let down. Only gripe I had with the series was no real armor, all stupid cosmetic only outfits.

Don't bother with Fable 3, it's terrible. Get the Witcher 2.

The Witcher 2 and Darksiders should suit your needs perfectly.

TW2 is absolutely amazing and Darksiders is a very solid game and will give you your hack n' slash fix

I would also recommend Risen as has been mentioned before, Divinity 2 is a good, lesser known RPG, Drakensang is another lesser known RPG you could look at (plays similar to Neverwinter Nights) and lastly I would say to have a look at Two Worlds 2. Its considerably better than Two worlds 1, although its not quite up to the standard of The Witcher but its definitely a good game if you're an RPG nutcase like me

Why do so many people here have such dogmatic views of what an RPG is,

In Half Life 1 & 2 you play the role of Gordan Freeman, there is a story, interaction with other characters, a plot, and a world to explore,
What exactly is wrong with classifying it as a 1st person RPG?
Enlighten me please. Your Avatar about sums it up.

Seeing as i recommended 4 or 5 games and not just this.
I was trying to recommend something that wasn't in every single other post, ie The Witcher 2.
In all 1st person shooters you play the role of someone. This doesn't make them rpg's. They're still fps's.

The main differentiator for me is: does your character level up by gaining xp.

Half life is a shooter with a story.

I recommend dark messiah: might and magic

I really enjoyed this game, has a few bugs but the combat is really addicting.

edit*it's borderline fps/rpg - i don't know - felt more like a rpg to me.

Also - Drakensang is a pretty good rpg as well.
