I still say the fans are too large for the heatsink. There is a gap on the top AND bottom of the fin array. The air is going to be directed to the areas of least pressure (the gaps) and be wasted. A 120mm fan will probably perform just as well (or better) and not take up so much valuable space.

couldn't they just improve on some design...being on par with a freaking old product isn't telling much about the industry going forward

How much further do you want them to go? There is a point where you cant cool the cpu anymore with a heatsink. They are using heatpipes, they could use vapor chambers, but that will only do so much.

What NZXT has done is made a heatsink that is top of the line, that hangs and surpasses the big boys. All while doing it wih considerably less noise.

If you are looking for temps closer to ambient you need to go to watercooling, or even chilled cooling.
