Kaspersky and Webroot; there is a reason Geek Squad pushes these products.

I just upgraded from KIS 2011, and it said the PC was protected, but then I manually select for it to update, and guess what ?

A massive 94.388kb update! That is larger than the installation file! What is going on ? If the program is new it shouldn't require such a massive database update, let alone tell me everything is fine, when the program was obviously out of date. Could this be a massive program update, to the engine, or something ? But if it is, why not put the updated file on the server ? But if it's a program update then it would probably ask me to reboot, which it didn't. All I have to say is it's strange.

Mine doesn't use 100% of ram, not sure what's going on with yours.
(Just ran a scan to verify, 400mb max usage during a scan. [Might depend on file size])

SkillzKillz is right; I was just running a full scan after installing KIS 2012, and although the memory usage (private working set) was around 400 MB, the general memory usage was at 95% and the computer almost stopped responding. And I have 4GB of RAM. After I told KIS to stop the scan, the memory usage dropped to 21%. When it was scanning, the cached memory levels and available and free were all very low.

This is annoying.

Weird I don't have that problem, have you talked to tech support about it?

Your general memory usage doesn't sky rocket ? Bear in mind it doesn't show in the processes tab in the task manager, you have to look at the general usage in the performance tab.

I only noticed it now. I don't recall the last time I did a full scan with the previous KIS 2011.

I was actually thinking of switching to another security package. I wasn't too impressed with KIS 2011 either. When you told it to stop a Full Scan it only obeyed your command a good 5 minutes after clicking the stop button.

I have 83 days left on my subscription to decide. I used to have Norton back in 2004, but then it got bloated and I left. It has since been optimized again. I don't know.

Yes the physical memory usage goes up, but I don't hang or stutter.

I really like kaspersky, I left MSE for it, before that I had norton, and before that mcafee.

You have 6GB of RAM, maybe that has something to do with it.

By how much does the the general memory usage go up on your system when you run a full scan ?

I'll let you know what it drops to after the scan finishes (I've got a lot of very large files so it's going to be a little while), right now it's at 84%.

I doubt me having 6gb would have much to do it with, if everyone was having the same problems as you kaspersky would be out of business. (A lot of people have even less than 4gb)

Well, if it's at 84%, then the 6GB of RAM are probably making the difference.

Can you take note of what are the values for "Cached", "available" and "free" ram before and after ?

You have a point, but let's not forget that many people either

a) never bother to run a full scan;

b) leave it running during the night.

If you have as much stuff as I do (and you have twice the storage space), it won't be finished in the next few hours. I had it running for more than 2 hours, and more than 1 million files scanned, and it estimated it would take another 7 hours to finish. I guess we'll talk in 7 hours then
