965 and asus m4a87td evo

Alright guys, I have had my rig for a while and want to start overclocking. I tried that ASUS AI thing and it brought me to 3.6 ghz, but I am sketched out when I dont get to do things. I restored my default BIOS settings. Now I have 2 questions:

1. By loading defaults for my BIOS is that overclock disabled

2. How the heck do I overclock on my mobo, I cannot figure it out. My past gigabyte boards have been much easier!

P.S. Im running a haf 912 case and about 6 fans appropriatly pushing/pulling with an aftermarket rocketfish CPU cooler that has been lapped with a thin layer of AS5 - is this enough?

1. Yes . . . I think tongue.gif

2. Go into "Jumper Free Configuration" and slowly increase the Multiplier until your unstable, then increase your v.core until your stable again, then repeat until you reach your multiplier maximum smile.gif good luck

Ok, do you think that it is worth me overclocking my 965? I have read quite a few tutorials but still am lacking confidence to do it myself, thats why i tried the automatic overclocking option.\

Also CPUZ says I am running my core voltage at 1.36 -1.392 with a 17x multiplier. Does anyone know if these numbers are stock?

yeah the default is about 1.4 so your on stock at the moment.

If you just increase the multiplier by .5x save and restart, then run some stability tests to check if its okay. Once you've made sure it's stable repeat until you reach your limit.

You can't go wrong with this really, but if you want to see how much your getting out of your overclock I'd recommend running some benchmarking software first, record the results and then run them again and check your results

yeah pretty much, but only make small changes at a time so you don't loose track of what's stable and whats not. But don't change anything if you don't know what it does, look it up first or ask on here, I'm sure someone will know.

first drop the memory multi down one notch so its not limiting the oc
if its 1600 set it to 1333

and keep the ht close to 2000 +/- 100

the rocketfish cooler looks smaller than a tx3, i wouldnt expect a great oc from it

watch the temps, 62c is the limit, keep it under 55c

This would apply if he is using a bus clock OC. If using a multiplier-based OC (965 is a BE), it doesn't matter smile.gif leave it at 1600Mhz.
