Should I Get 2x GTX 580 3GB Lightning XE In SLI?

Thread Starter
I have been really complemtating this question. I currently run a Dell U3011 with 2x GTX 580 Black Ops in SLI. I mostly play Shogun 2, Bad Company 2, Starcraft 2. However, I do plan to play Witcher 2 and Battlefield 3. The thing is looking at my VRAM usuage, I rarely ever max out 1.5gb of VRAM. With 1600p, 8xmsaa, 16x af, all highest settings, my Bad Company 2 pretty much never drops below 60fps and only uses up to 1.3gb of VRAM.

I don't know if it will be worth it to get the 3GB. I mean my Shogun 2 runs on 8x aa and 16x af and doesnt max out the 1.5gb. I do know that if I run Bad Company 2 and Shogun 2 on 16x aa then it will max out the 1.5gb and be bottlenecked. But the question is, is 8x aa to 16x aa even gonna make a difference on 1600p? If I don't plan to play Crysis or Metro, would it still be worth it?

Another factor is I want to be able to max future games out in 1600p such as Battlefield 3. Ultimately after selling off my 2x GTX 580 Black Ops, I will have paid $350 to upgrade to 2x GTX 580 3gb Lightnings.

So what do you guys think? Should I upgrade?

Don't bother. I'd just upgrade once BF3 actually releases in October.

I mean you could, but it would be a waste of money if you're not even maxing out your current 580's. If you really want lightnings, don't go for the Xtreme version. It's just not worth it at your res.

I wouldn't, you're not seeing your Vram go over, and you're cards are still very powerful. We don't know how BF3 will do, but I'd wait.

Start gaming @ 5760x1080 and higher, then it makes sense to upgrade to the 3gb version.

Unless you go three monitors dont do it.

I'd say no, 580 SLI should see you through for a while, I don't think Battlefield 3 will be as demanding as people are thinking, they're demoing it on single 580s at 1080p, so I'm pretty sure 580 SLI will be sufficient to play it at 2560x1600...

If you are looking for performance, you won't find hardly any in a 3GB card more than what you have.

The smart thing would be to get a 3rd 580 GTX 1.5GB, or stick with what you got till the game is even released.

I don't know why but everyone assumes the 3GB card is faster?

At that rez, no. Wait for Kepler. The high rez displays don't need lots of AA.

Its more of a VRAM issue. The 3GB is useful on triple monitor setups (as one poster said) and can be useful on 1600p and possibly 1440p if high rez textures are used. I get 1.4GB on some BC2 maps and Metro. Booty has gone over 1.5 in DA2 and TW2 IIRC.
