CHEERS..
just realized its a 9550, not a 9650... none the less, it should be able to do around 4.3 stable with a good cooler and fast ram

I upgraded from an 9950 BE to an i 2500k.. Meh! Not worth 550 bucks for total system costs.

Keep your money and save for Ivy or Enhanced Dozer.

I ask because I don't really know much about QXXX Core 2's compared to i7s and i5s (performance wise)... So I don't know if I am already like significantly behind the curve and soon going to be left in the dust or if my CPU is still pretty capable?

Thanks!
Core 2 Quads are still quite competitive with today's processors, especially with a bit of an overclock. They beat Phenom IIs clock for clock and can trade blows with last gen i5's/i7's, not sure about Sandy Bridge, haven't looked at benchmarks for a while.

You'll be fine for quite a while still.

A Q wouldn't be way slower in gaming but not 'about the same' either. I'm guessing around the 15 - 20% faster. Not in max but in min framerates which bumps up the average as well.

I think you have a well-rounded setup. But I will say this. The value of the Q9550 won't last forever. I sold mine for $150 in less than a day. I sold my ram for $50 in less than an hour. I sold my mobo for $75 in a few hours. After deals at Microcenter, I only ended up needing to kick in about $150 of my own money to make a substantial upgrade. Especially if you consider that my 9550 would only do 3.4, and my 2500K is at 4.5 (with more headroom should I ever need it).

So, if you are feeling CPU limited in the things you use your computer for, $150 will give you a nice big boost.

This is why upgrading now instead of later can pay off

Long enought! The Q9550/Q9650 are awesome chips! I'm very happy with mine thumb.gifapplaud.gif

That would be pretty hard pressed to do. Even with a higher clock, those chips are not better. A slower i7 can get MUCH better fps in a game like the witcher (last one) or dcs A10 for example.

My q9650 at 4ghz was bottlenecking my 3x gtx 280s . I7 at 3.4 doesnt .

I went from a q9650 4 ghz to a i7 at 3.4 ghz and saw very large differences in terms of fps.

But that said, I still love that q9650. It is going into the family backup.
