Gigabyte GTX 580 Phantom 3GB: Worth it?

Thread Starter
As the thread title suggests, I'm eying that Gigabyte, I could get it for a nice price.
I wonder whether the doubled memory is worth its price premium?
I'll probably be stuck with that card for a while so I'd like it to be a bit future-proof smile.gif
I heard more than 1.5 GB are necessary to render contemporary and upcoming games at higher resolutions anyway, is that true, and if yes, does it matter all that much?
What CPU?

What monitor?

For 1920x1080, 3gb is USELESS.

For 2560x1600/surround, it's a godsend.
It really depends on the game/AA, resolution, # of displays. Can you give us more of an idea of what you are working with? You don't have much in your sig.

It's all for the planned-out rig tongue.gif

Monitor is currently a 19" CRT which goes up to 1600x1200, which will be used until I can acquire a new LCD or LED, I'll probably get one that goes up to 1920x1080.
CPU will probably be an FX-8130P or i7-2600K.

If you're planning on using the card in SLI in the future, remember that you have the match the memory amount.
Phantom is only from Gainward. I think your looking at Windforce? Also, I would only get a 3gb card if you are running more then 1200p IMO.

If you're going to stick with just a single monitor at 1080p or 1200p, the 3GB version is useless as someone above said. If you're going for 2 monitors at 1080p, its pretty good, but still can be done without (maybe). However, if you plan on running 3 1080p monitors, I'd say its a necessity.

So, 1 monitor = not worth it/useless
2 monitors = possibly
3+ = most definitely

Ah, yes, very sorry, it's indeed the Gainward... those capital Gs got me confused.

Thanks for your help, I'll look for another card.
just get the 1.5gb card.

You'll run out of processing power before VRAM in future titles anyway.

Can't do three monitors on Nvidia, but yes you might need it for 2 monitors depending on what you are doing.
