I would start off with looking at an Athlon quad or an i3. Seems like they want something more along the lines of an HTPC.

Do you have anything already for it, like a case, DVD drive, hard drive, Monitor, Keyboard, speakers...

Or do you need everything?
I think your answer will determine if it's gonna be a AMD rig, or Intel.

Wait, why are people putting in a GTX460, I did not see gaming on that list anywhere.

You could probably get away with an integrated AMD GPU no problem.

Also, I don't think you need an i5 in there. A dual core i3 will be more then enough.

I know it says his parents are willing to pay $600 but that does not mean they WANT to max out their budget. This system can be had for 400-500 no problem and complete those tasks without a hitch.

I agree, for there cash limit, you could still build a very nice and powerful AMD system!

As far as I know, browsing and watching movies are 2 of the easiest tasks for your cpu???
Please say so if I'm wrong!

Pretty close, but I don't think you can beat word processing.

Heck, I've been gaming on a E4600 up to Crysis, I'm positive your parents don't need anything more powerful then a E4600.

Got cha! 1 more quick question!

How old are your parents?
I only ask cause, heck, I'm over 50, and enjoy gaming, overlocking, benching....

Regardless of age, you can never say never!
Your Dad may sit down one day and say, hey that game looks fun???
