12 core decision - Page 2

I would hold off for Intels next generation 6 core cpu. But if you cant wait a i7 970 would be a nice upgrade.

Going with an AMD G34 system you're looking at future upgradeability. BD is not too far off with Interlagos around the corner After BD gets out it should be easy to get used MC at a good price. I was able to get 4 MC ES @ $150 ea. not to long ago. They are 2.0GHz but being ES chips they can be OC. BaBa has his up to 2.9GHz IIRC and is pulling over 800k ppd with it.

The only thing with going the 4p route is cost; building one from the ground up will be in the $1900 range excluding cpu's. But there’ always a 2p @ half the cost.

going to g34 would be very expensive.
i wonder how well a quad socket g34 board with 48 cores would perform at folding. Board Link

Getting 3 970 @ $600 ea. is $1800 so that isn't very cheap either.

And like I said with BD getting close to launch used MC will be hitting the market at good prices. I paid $600 for 4 MC's...not too bad.

i never said it wasn't.
is the 970 also a server chip?
im not very up to date on intel chips.

Im looking to build my self a nice opty system for rendering and Folding once i get the funds And see how bd performs.

I wasn't trying to imply anything

To put a price on a 4p MC system I have $2500 in mine. I went water and had some of the water cooling items already. Air would be a little cheaper.

It should be noted that Opterons do not overclock much at all. The BIOSes simply don't let you.

Thread Starter
The Gulftown is not a server chip in the sense of the i7 cpu's that the SR-2 needs to use (isn't there a name for that feature that the SR-2 chips have that links them q?). The Gulftowns can run independantly but they are getting a bit old, but still it looks like the cheapest way to get 12 core qualified (without a server trick). When I bought these i7's I looked at and thought that there would be re-sale value, now with Sandy Bridge being all the rage and Bulldozer comming on people quickly forget how just a year ago we were all singing the socket 1366 song.I think that now they have the greatest value to me.

There's no OC option in the BIOS on any G34 board.

To OC a MC you need to get ES (enginering sample) chips and cycle through the P-states. link to some discussion on P-state switching

2.0GHz to 2.9GHz isn't a bad OC on an Opty
