There's no OC option in the BIOS on any G34 board.

To OC a MC you need to get ES (enginering sample) chips and cycle through the P-states. link to some discussion on P-state switching

2.0GHz to 2.9GHz isn't a bad OC on an Opty
I agree the 4P, MC is the way to go if you have the knowledge and existence to build and operate one. I myself have been a AMD fan for years but the last few years folding has been owned by Intel. My first folding rig was a 2600K and then every FX CPU up to a FX 60 in 2007 http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ml#post2702560 My next build will most likely be a 4P, MC type system but that will not be until my Gulftowns become outdated I still have one 920 to switch over to a 970 in the next week or 2. PCCStudent is pretty much in the same place I am he has all the equipment needed to do a simple cost effective switch that should keep him very completive for another year or 2. And the choice of going to the Gulftowns appears to be the most cost effective at this time.

PCC, I really mean no offense (you know how I sometimes say exactly whats on my mind... ), but why upgrade for the sake of folding if you don't fold full time for the summer. For now your 4-core i7s are still a good option for the summer months. I understand it gets pretty warm at your location and in the past you have taken it lightly with folding during the warm months. At the end of the summer, it might be best to re-evaluate the options.

But then, sometimes, you just need to jump in and buy... instead of waiting... like when you wanted to buy a bunch of GTX275s back when that was pretty much the best option for ppd/$ or when you were pretty much set on getting the SR2 last year.

I got an i7 970 this past week, got it in doing bigadv in windows right now, and will work on some linux folding sometime when I'm not working 12 hr days. For me, it will definitely be worth it since I fold pretty much 24/7, 365.
I did already have plans to buy one before these 12 core units were announced. I will sell my 930 to make up some of the cost of buying.

Thread Starter
Correct I am not writing any checks yet. I must get a quality window unit for my bedroom as it is unbearable with the machines going(well over 110F) and the AC does not come for another month at best. If I did have the bedroom AC I would like to go at it 24/7 but it is simply not possible without it. Putting the rigs outside (like I did last summer) has too many negatives because of the sideways blowing rain. This rain cost me some real money last year.My decision will wait till I get the AC going. I wanted to ask what happened with CyGnus (the man from Portugal?)I do not see any posts or any points and he was always here.

EDIT: my school schedule is pretty horendus next semester. 14 credit hours from the 3rd CCNA prep clas,an active directory class and a Linux Administrator class. After that 4 more classes(but 16 credit hours) and I am done, but I will not be ready to pass the CCNA, need more instruction.

EDIT: I really have only had 1 24/7 month (output was 2.5 million) and I want to see just how high I can get (with my room temp controlled and no failed WU's). The bad part is even when it is winter there will still be some AC usage due to the machine heat. I kind of figure 50.00 a month more electricity minimum and for now my income is fixed, but you know how it is when you get the bug to see how much you can make, it certainly is a sort of addiction. I know what we need,12 step program for a folding addiction.

He was viewing this thread at the time that I started my last post... haven't heard much from him though, and looks like the folding stopped a little while ago...

And I agree with you on the addiction part
I gave up gaming because of folding...

i know u want big daddy but are you better off adding 450 gtx(or better) and folding on thos. more ppd if you add 4 gpus per rig. think what would be cheaper to get as-well.
My 580 folds better then i930 @ 4.3 ghz ht on .

Hmmm 1 - 580GTX = $500 = ? 30,000 ? PPD 1 - 970 = $570 = 120,000 PPD Which is better choice.
