Sli problems! Helppp plzzz

Thread Starter
I got a system from my uncle's friend and it is running 2x XFX GeForce 7600GT 256mb GDDR3 in SLI. Which was a huge upgrade from a HD3450. Anyways, the system runs near flawlessly. Temps on the card never go above 90C. (No idea what they are rated for and cannot get a good answer online). The problem is that in games or fullscreen/high res movies the graphics freak out and start puking artifacts. Everything is running at stock settings. This even happens when the temps are low. OCCT's error checking doesn't register them/detect them as artifacts though, and they seem different then normal artifacts too... They are continuous and flicker quickly. They also seem to outline the images. Also impossible to screenshot. It only happens when SLI is enabled. When it is disabled it appears fine. Also it is much more noticeable at higher resolutions.

Any idea what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks

Try each card by itself. You may have a bad card.
Is it the same 'look' on every game? How many different ones have you tried? Is the problem ever totally 'not there' on any particular game?

Did you try it single card on both cards individually yet? That'd be my first move.

If both cards are fine by themselves ... then I'd probably throw on some old drivers (maybe some 160-170 series) just to see what happens. That's free, and pretty easy to try if you can find such drivers.

And what do you mean by 'impossible to screenshot'? You mean a ctrl-print screen shot won't show these artifacts? You tried it a bunch of times? Because that is pretty interesting indeed

Same look on every game so far. Furmark, OCCT, Heroes of Newerth, C&C, and noticed on some high res youtube videos.

Haven't tried both cards individually yet, but will do that tomorrow if I cannot find another fix.

Drivers shouldn't be a problem... they worked fine with single gpu and my friend uses the same drivers in sli and no problems?

And yes... i'v tried like 20 times to screen shot this madness but it doesn't show up. I'll try a few more but I'm pretty certain that it's not gonna show.

EDIT: just tried 5 more times but doesn't show on screenshots.

Not showing on screenies points at the problem being 'downstream' from the cards. I know it 'shouldn't' matter SLI vs. Single if it is, but I'd try a different cable and adapter if applicable, and a different monitor, just to rule them out. Very strange. Interested to hear the outcome of the 2nd single card test as well.

I can't imagine 90c is considered good for 7 series cards. Even by Fermi standards that's pretty hot

Might want to check the fans/heatsinks for dust.

That said, your problem doesn't sound temp related. But for the life of your system, I'd try and bring those temps down.

Well. I got it solved... somewhat.

I tested both cards and they test ok. Also apparently these always ran hot but they are rated for like 115C (So I'm told) so they are still in the ok range.

After a lot of research, I found out that Nvidia basically screwed up and never fixed it. The problem that I am having only happens in SLI and there is 3 ways to fix it which are...

1. Don't use SLI (Obviously not a good fix)
2. Use OLD drivers. The latest driver that works is 84.21 , Anything after that and the problem exists. It is solved in 84.21 though. Nvidia obviously messed something up in the drivers and never fixed it.
3. Remove SLI bridge.

I did option 3. Removing the SLI bridge only decreased performance by 2-3% yet it stopped all of the visual corruption issues. Don't ask me how it stopped the issues, I have no idea. I do know that the issue is driver related though.
The performance loss is minimal because the PCIe bus is still fine for these cards communicating and the bus isn't over saturated at all, which isn't the case with some newer cards. Normally removing the SLI bridge causes quite the performance loss in newer cards but not with these older ones.

So, now I use the newest drivers and can take advantage of those and only lose a couple % performance from the missing SLI bridge and I have no visual corruption.

Apparently many people had this issue with these cards in SLI. If not everyone with these.
So that is my conclusion lol Thanks for the input everyone.
