Two LED's

Thread Starter
I'm trying to wire two "5v" red LEDs to replace the two orange ones that came with the NZXT Vulcan. The original wiring had them both going to the 5v on the molex, but there is a resistor. Do I need a resistor? If someone could post a wiring diagram I would be very grateful.

I didn't use a resistor when i switched over to white leds on my 200s

You don't need one for red LED's.

Ok, so I'll just wire them in parallel reverse polarity to the 5v line on the molex?

I find this calculator to be extemely useful: http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

Used it when doing my case mod.

Thanks for that website, I understand and will probably do it that way.

I am curious though what does it mean with reverse voltage specs? Could I wire them backwards without resistors or is that for a -5v line?
LEDs are diodes and as such are polarity sensitive and only allow current to flow through in one direction. The reverse voltage spec tells you the voltage (with reversed polarity) at which the diode will break down/fail.

If the LEDs are rated for a forward voltage of 5V, then you can run them off the 5V rail without a resistor; the fact that the original LEDs were in series with a resistor indicates that the LEDs were rated for ~2-3V, in which case a current limiting resistor is necessary such that the voltage across the LED itself does not exceed it's forward voltage spec.

I have wired at least hundreds of LEDs and if you want can provide the theory necessary for determining resistor sizing etc. (basically the backbone of the wizard someone else linked previously).

You Do need a resitor! I recommend using the same one with the stock leds! I once Fried a led Cuz I was testing if I needed resistor and it fried like a PopCorn.

Not completely accurate. If the forward voltage of the LED (or sum of voltages for LEDs in series) is the same as the supply voltage, then you don't need a resistor; granted those cases are not that common, so probably 95% of the time a current limiting resistor is necessary.
