Graphics card suggestions needed: i7930@4.0 700w PSU

Okay so my temporary graphics card solution is beginning to weigh on my rig. I had an unfortunate mishap with my PSU recently (see sig rig) which left me scrambling over to BB and overpaying for an inferior unit, but long story short heres the situation.

I have now my sig rig running on a Corsair GS700 using a PSU calculator says that I should have a 684w psu. Basically my question is should I buy a new gpu, or upgrade the PSU now and later get a gpu that will still stay within the recommended wattage. How much leeway do I have one way or another? I want a good gpu (max out Witcher2) I use the pc about 15hours/day. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

IMO i believe that your PSU (assuming that we are talking about the computer listed on your profile) is good enough for something like a HD 6870 or a gtx560 which would max out the game at 1080p.
Up to you though.... if you wish to upgrade later on after buying the gpu then you would most likely need a new power supply, but then again things will be cheaper than what they are now so it is completely up to you.

I appreciate the quick response YG. Based on the current GPU climate I'm most interested in the 6990 >.> which I know is overkill but I figure it would last me a bit longer. Do you think upgrading to a 6870 now and then waiting for the next round of cards to come out would make sense to go up to a bigger PSU and GPU, or by that point the rest of the system will be old news and I'm going to just have to replace it all anyways? I know technically the whole thing is old news now but you know what I mean, I'm skeptical to go up to a 6870 for example then end up within the year seeing my GPU on the minimum system requirements. (thats how I base my upgrades when I see a part on a min req sheet I upgrade to [hopefully] the best product out in hopes to see as much life out of it).

I was basing my response on the game you mentioned, if you are going to buy the HD 6990 then you will last until all of your system needs replacing (which won't be for a while) and you PSU should be enough for it as long as everything in your pc stays the same and you do not overclock the card to the extreme, if you do not overclock it you will be 100% fine. The best option in my opinion if you have the cash for the HD 6990 is to go for it and that way you will last longer and you can do a big upgrade when the time comes.

Glad I could help btw

EDIT: if you get the HD 6990 with the PSU you have, I recommend not overclocking it, did some research lol. but you should be fine, like i said, if not overclocked.

Although there isn't a calculation for a 6990 a there is one for a 6970 and 6970 xfire, both say over 900w minimum recommended wattage (947W 6970 and 1199w for CF) Is that just staying on the safe side? Worst case scenario what the PSU blows again?

EDIT When you say everything else stays the same, that means no more HDD's as well? I've started filling up the 1tb and thinking about going RAID, i would figure thats a negligible gain though correct?

(i have edited my response ^)
WORST case yes, but IMO you should be fine if not overclocking, but would be nice to hear from other people as well...

EDIT: If you are going to upgrade other things, then I guess your down to choosing to upgrade your power now (big enough for future build) along with either the HD 6990 or something a little bit worse and upgrading or putting the card in cf later on. Either way you should get a new PSU if you see upgrades in your future

Your be fine with the 6990 and the Corsair PSU. Check out some reviews of the card for full system load, unless your running a ton of hard drives it is going to be less than 700W.

He wishes to upgrade things in the future though... and yes i have read some of the reviews, the card draws a maximum of 450watts... i'm not the best at this but if he is going to upgrade, might aswell get a good PSU now that can be used for later builds. (my opinion)

Just noticed the edit, yeh i didnt plan to OC the 6990 really so thats looking like the best option. I just was afraid of being so far under the "recommendation" I really appreciate the advice guys. I'm gonna just grab a 6990 next time I see one at a "reasonable" price and hope for the best. I may go with a bigger PSU after the fact but that's something I can always re-use in the next build taking into account something larger. I can just stick with the 1tb spinpoint for awhile I'm at like 30% full atm.

thanks again for the replies +rep

Glad I could help, yea as long as you keep things as are, should be fine then later make sure you get a big enough power supply (quality one of course) suitable for future upgrades/new system

Good luck
