SLi 460 GTX's Random Screen Lockups

Hello there, having a bit of a problem with a pair of 460 GTX's I just recently got from building this new system. Been building computers for a good while but never setup a SLi configuration before so pretty new to this thing. Latest Drivers FYI (275.33.)

The computer has been running fine lately unless I decide to play a game or run a benchmark. 3DMark 11 runs perfectly fine, never froze (Basic mind you). I ran Heaven 2.5 (Not 2.1 yet), screen froze within a few seconds of it starting but sound continued to play. Restarted, checked temps, ran it again on full settings. It ran perfectly fine throughout the entire benchmark, but when it comes to the result screen it freezes again with sound still playing. Nothing shows up in the event logs, only relevant thing is an OpenGL crash which only happened once within the past 2 weeks (Around the time I started this build). I run OC Scanner and it runs fine in 15min Stress Tests until I full-screen it, freezes up.

This also occurs when playing Bad Company 2 and Metro 2033 (Haven't tried anything else), everything max settings at 1680x1050. Get a bit into each SP and the game freezes, with full audio and scripted dialogue going on in background. Have never had this issue with any computer build before so figured if someone might know what is happening.

I did not do a clean install of Win7 when I did a full rebuild, but I did clean out all my old drivers from my old components and installed new ones. Temps have seen tops of 56C when running OC Scanner, no higher than that, and the bottom GPU is running slower/colder. This could be due to how SLi works, again never done a Dual GPU setup before.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Shoulin. Make sure latets chipset drivers and BIOS have been applied to the mainboard. Take off the SLI bridge and reseat it to make sure it isn't loose. Also test each of the cards alone just incase one of them has developed a fault. Lower the ingame settings to see if the issues ease up.

Full rebuild, as in, new motherboard? Without a re-install of Windows? Assuming all is at stock, and you're having these issues ... I would re-install Windows for sure. It's one thing to go from one x58 (for example) mobo to another, but if you changed sockets, which I imagine is the case given your gear ... you really should re-install.

Harry's advice is all good though, may as well try I suppose. Checking for a new mobo BIOS on the Asus website and flashing it if there is one .. for SURE you should do that. Testing each card individually, using each of the two slots you're using for SLI, is definitely a good call.

I updated the BIOS and chipset when I was able to get into Windows for the first time. I reseated each card a few times and even cleaned off the connections as was mentioned on the forums before but to no avail.

I have never had a problem with a full rebuild without reinstalling Windows, but I haven't made this large a jump before so that could be it. Came from a Q6600, 4gig DDR2, 260 GTX MaxCore 55. I had planned to do a reformat on my OS HDD in the future when I got my H60 installed, since that was yesterday I guess I could do that. I will try each card alone first before I do that though. Am I able to test each one by turning off SLi and manually selecting which card I want to use? Or do I gotta do it the ole fashioned way?

I reformated my computer, ran Heaven 2.5 again and it crashed again with a D3D11 error, didn't get a chance to catch it before the screen went blank. Checked Event Viewer and the only thing I was able to see on there was "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." That references the NVidia driver crashing, but this is the current driver on a fresh system with nothing but the essentials installed.

Are the current drivers not stable for anyone else, or should I be looking for something else. I have yet to check each card by themselves yet, this was still in SLi, I will do some more messing around to see if I can come up with something else.

Any help would be awesome!

Try using an older driver like 266.xx instead of 275.xx.

That was going to be my last option but think I found the issue, well 2.

Ran each card by themselves, or at least tried to. Switched the cards in both slots first, then switched the Monitor cable to each one, ran fine minus the locking up. Then I tried both cards individually.

Card 1:
Heaven 2.5
4 different setups including max, ran fine without going above 58c.
OC Scanner Torture Test
4 different setups again, including the Heavy GPU twice on different timing intervals, temps didn't exceed 55-58c again.

Card 2:
Screen tearing & lockup at Windows logo with 4 reboots, same result on each.

I was under the impression that the SLi bridge wouldn't bring a DOA card back to life and allow it to actually run to an extent. This is bizarre, but I tracked it down to the bridge (I hope?) and the one 460 that just wouldn't startup. Sent the card back to Newegg for replacement and ASUS is gonna send me a new SLi bridge for free.

The tearing resembled what happened to my 8800GT before I gave it the good ole baking medicine, wonder if that would of fixed the issue.

Hopefully this new card works and I don't run into another bizarre scenario like this again. Thanks for the help guys.
