i7 970 (hexacore) vs 2008 Mac Pro Dual Xeon (Hapertown/Penryn)

Hey everyone,

I'll try to make this brief. I'm a film composer, looking to build a new rig. I've always been PC and love it. recently I've been looking at the i7-970 (hexacore) but a teacher of mine who is very very pro mac tells me I should ditch PC for a 2008 8-core mac pro (costs roughly 2K, I can updgrade my system to i7-970 for 1k).

the 2008 Mac Pros have Dual Xeon e5462 processors (Hapertown/Penryn) at 2.8ghz. the i7-970 runs at 3.2ghz. Unless I'm wrong the Xeons do NOT have hyperthreading (so 8 physical and logical cores, as opposed to the i7's 6 physical cores and 12 logical).

Any thoughts on which would be more powerful?

OCN doesn't really agree with Mac's. I am telling you right now that everyone else will go for the other one.

Ah yeah I figured that might be the case. that's why I tried to make the post more about the raw processors, not Mac vs PC (I'm big on PC).

Definitely go for the 970. You will be able to overclock it, and it will likely outperform the dual quads.
